ryoder 1,590 #51 December 14, 2007 Quote This leads me to believe there would also be a problem with non-christians serving in the military. If I go by some of the staunch conservatives on this board, they aren't overly comfortable with mexicans either, so should they serve? What if it isn't completely clear if their whole family is legally in the US? Wouldn't there be some bonding issues too? I like your argument! To broaden the scope, the whole no-gays-in-the-military argument is that it makes bigots uncomfortable, so the rule was set in place for the benefit of the bigots."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. Maybe ONLY gays should be in the army, so that the population of the country is not adversely affected (old Greek idea, I think). (.)Y(.) Maybe ONLY gays should be in the army, so that the population of the country is not adversely affected (old Greek idea, I think). I've always thought the Foreign Legion was one of the best ideas the French ever had. A purely voluntary professional force composed of people from anywhere and everywhere, with undisclosed backgrounds. The movie "The Dirty Dozen" also had an idea with merit. If you are the enemy, would you prefer to fight: a) A bunch of scared draftees who would rather be in college? b) A bunch of thugs and killers who like what they are doing? shropshire 0 #54 December 14, 2007 The Germans did a similar thing too during WW2 some form of penal tank support brigade (I think that Sven Hassel wrote about them - I read a lot of his books when I was a kid......a loooong time ago, so I could be wrong) (.)Y(.) Just another example of "it's been done", however I was thinking in terms of an infantry force that engages the enemy, as opposed to a military-police-intelligence force that terrorizes it's own people."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. jgoose71 0 #61 December 15, 2007 I voted "Don't ask don't tell". I really don't have a problem with gays in the military, but some of my assignments have lead to what is best described as "tight quarters". I just don't think I would be to comfortable parading my naked ass around in front of a bunch of gay men. Now if they made all the showers co-ed, then I may reconsider my stance, after all, what is fair is fair. But for right now, ignorance is bliss. If you want to look at my ass, just don't tell me about it. "There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss."
