I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA

Recommended Posts

I just finished watching this documentary last night.

I thought director Matthew Galkin did a pretty good job at keeping it balanced between interviews with supporters & detractors of PETA.

If you missed it, here is the HBO schedule.

The DVD will release January 8th, 2008 and is available through Netflix.

If so, how did it compare?

It touches on a lot of the same material & has some of the same criticism (minus the sarcasm, which admittedly always makes things more fun for me to watch and read, but I sucked it up and watched anyways).

I love Penn & Teller, but on some of the "Bullshit" episodes, Penn's language goes WAY overboard and degrades the quality of the show, IMHO.

Some of the points made by Penn & Teller are really moot, others hold water.

Such is true for most one-sided arguments which is why I generally like a bit more balance before buying the rhetoric.

I believe the I Am An Animal documentary provided that balance. I don't expect it stands to change the overall view of either side, but it certainly provides some wonderful perspective.

A friend of mine, related his thoughts on 'animal rights activists'. He expressed wonder at the thought that Walt Disney is really the one who triggered thoughts of animal rights by 'humanizing' the animals in his feature length animations as well as his animal documentaries.

Eat Steak by

Eat steak, eat steak eat a big ol' steer
Eat steak, eat steak do we have one dear?
Eat beef, eat beef it's a mighty good food
It's a grade A meal when I'm in the mood.

Cowpokes'll come from a near and far
When you throw a few rib-eyes on the fire
Roberto Duran ate two before a fight
'Cause it gave a lot of mighty men a lot of mighty might

Eat steak, eat steak eat a big ol' steer
Eat steak, eat steak do we have one dear?
Eat beef, eat beef it's a mighty good food
It's a grade A meal when I'm in the mood.

Eat meat, eat meat, filet mignon
Eat meat, eat meat, eat it all day long
Eat a few T-bones till you get your fill
Eat a new york cut, hot off the grill

Eat steak, eat steak eat a big ol' steer
Eat steak, eat steak do we have one dear?
Eat beef, eat beef it's a mighty good food
It's a grade A meal when I'm in the mood.

Eat a cow, eat a cow 'cuase it's good for you
Eat a cow, eat a cow it's the thing that goes Mooooo

Look at all the cows in the slaughterhouse yeard
Gotta hit'em in the head, gotta hit'em real hard
First you gotta clean'em then the butcher cuts'em up
Throws it on a scale throws an eyeball in a cup

Saw a big Brangus Steer standing right over there
So I rustled up a fire cooked him medium rare
Bar-B-Q'ed his brisket, and roasted his rump
Fed my dog that ol' Brangus Steer's hump

Eat steak, eat steak eat a big ol' steer
Eat steak, eat steak do we have one dear?
Eat beef, eat beef it's a mighty good food
It's a grade A meal when I'm in the mood.

For every animal Ms. Newkirk does not eat, I shall consume three.

Were you going to cite the original author on this? :D

At least it's not wikipedia

edited to add: And if you liked that, you should definately buy the book. A favorite quote is:
