moodyskydiver 0 #1 November 20, 2007 Ok, so I'm new to hunting and my hubby and I will be fitting me out with my own hunting gear. All I have right now is a blaze orange hat that I got free from taking the safety course.I figured I'd ask here so as not to forget anything that we may have overlooked. Also, I'll be needing a new pair of boots (along with alot of other clothing, camo, first aid, tolietries and whatnot) so I'm open to suggestions on a good boot for camping and hunting.I have a pair of Ariat work boots that are tan and fit very comfortably but maybe I need something else?Like I said, I'd love some suggestions if anyone has them. This is what I have so far on my list of things to get before hunting,,give me your opinion or info if I've left something out. gun and ammo (duh!) compass/map layered/insulated clothing camouflage outer clothing first aid kit anti-scent soap/deodorant ground line web belt canteen/thermos blaze orange hat/vest water purifier tablets hunting knife w/gut hook dressing kit gloves backpack sidearm (my 1911) and holster blanket MREs/food stuff poncho fire sticks/lighter flashlight w/colored lenses cell phone (for emergencies) 2way radios when buddy hunting camera toiletries I just feel like I'm forgetting something... TrophyHusband 0 #2 November 20, 2007 don't bother with the dressing kit. you can do everything you need to do with a hunting knife. don't bother with a side arm, you already have a gun so its just extra weight. don't take a blanket either, unless its one one those silver emergecy blankets. you're going to be walking throught the woods all day carrying all that stuff and then you have to drag a deer out on top of it all. think hard about what you really need, stuff can get heavy. PhreeZone 20 #4 November 20, 2007 How long are you going out for? Out at dawn in at night? If so a lot of that is overkill to carry for deer. Infact here in Ohio carrying a second gun is illegal for deer during our Shotgun season (there is no rifle hunting permitted for deer here) I used to take my licence/tags Plug for the gun (limited ammo allowed in the shutguns here) 15-20 shells hydration pack with some snacks in it GPS radio knife flashlight 1/4 roll TP Rope to drag with I left things like the first aid kit and stuff in the truck, if I am hurt bad enough to need a kit I was going to need to call for help anyways. Its a good though to take a blanket but its just weight to slow you down. The Poncho is useless if you've waterproofed your gear ahead of time and will only make noise. I hunted with and with out Camo and it never really made a difference if I was walking, if I was still hunting it only helped a little. Scout the area really good ahead of time and you can avoid getting lost and can skip the map, the firestarters and the rest of the overnight stuff. freethefly 6 #5 November 20, 2007 Plan on hiking for days? Skip all the crap you'll never use. Me, I take my rifle and at least ten rounds. Camo coveralls that I have never washed. A bottle of water and some sandwiches. A mini maglite. Of course my tags and orange. My camera. My buck 110v for gutting. I almost always get a deer. I never use any of the crap that they push at the Bass Proshop. You don't need to spend money on anti-scent soap or any deer scent. You do need to be familiar with the area. Know how the deer are moving. Know what is around you so not to put a stray round into someones home or into someones cow. Be very familiar with your rifle. Be very quite and very still. Good luck."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

moodyskydiver 0 #7 November 20, 2007 Quote Infact here in Ohio carrying a second gun is illegal for deer during our Shotgun season (there is no rifle hunting permitted for deer here) man that sucks. We canpretty much carry as many firearms as we want rifle or otherwise and people prefer to carry a sidearm incase of snakes and such. I'm not planning on taking all of this stuff into the woods with me.I'm talking about leaving most of it in the truck for emergencies or if something happens and we have to spend the night.Hell no I wouldnt carry all that crap!and just like at a DZ jumping, no beer until after the hunting is over for the day!So whats everyones thoughts on hunting footwear? I have a good pair of Ariat workboots that are very broken in and are comfy, would that work or should I buy a separate pair just for hunting?I'm looking at cost, durability, and comfort factors. TrophyHusband 0 #8 November 20, 2007 before you go hunting, do a 5-10 miles hike in you boots and see how your feet feel. i'm not familiar with the brand of workboots you have, but my feet would be pissed if i tried to hunt in my work boots. also make sure they are waterproof. the boots i had last year weren't waterproof and it made me miserable during elk season. and don't forget to keep the wind at your back and the sun in your face. Fast 0 #9 November 20, 2007 Quotedon't bother with a side arm, you already have a gun so its just extra weight. That sucks. My dad always carried his pistol in the event that he encountered another animal that didn't take kindly to him being in the woods. Then again, they don't particularly care what you carry for guns where he hunted.~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. warpedskydiver 0 #10 November 20, 2007 Never go hunting in boots taht have not been worn daily for a few weeks. That can be said for long hikes as well, without your feet, you are a goner.
