Ian84 0 #2 November 13, 2007 I just watched it last night and loved it too. I wonder if the aerial photography at the start was authentic footage.

Guest #8 November 13, 2007 Quote I just watched it last night and loved it too. I wonder if the aerial photography at the start was authentic footage. Yes, it is authentic. It was shot by a Canadian documentary team early in the war. Herzog got permission to use the footage in his original documentary about Dieter Dengler, "Little Dieter Needs to Fly", and re-used it for "Rescue Dawn". Used in "Little Dieter", the Skyraider air strike footage is some of the most moving film I've ever seen. Dengler also wrote a book about his ordeal, called "Escape from Laos". I have a hardbound first edition. Dengler was unbelieveably lucky, and brave (and he won the Navy Cross. That's just one below the Medal of Honor. He couldn't have been awarded it, because there weren't any witnesses to corroborate his incredible valor). I would loved to have met him, having read "Escape from Laos" when he was still alive, but sadly, he passed away from Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (aka Lou Gherigs' Disease) in 2001.RIP Dieter - fly free. mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
