NCclimber 0 #27 November 7, 2007 QuoteAs I mentioned in another thread, this one quote from his website is enough to make me unlikely to vote for him: "In Congress, I have authored legislation that seeks to define life as beginning at conception, HR 1094." I don't consider that to be an "irrelevant issue" to how he will run the country. Practically, this is a non-issue. There is no way such a bill could make it into law. No way. It's too extreme. If you like his platform, don't let this bit of window dressing for small portion of the population deter you from supporting him.
Shotgun 1 #28 November 7, 2007 About 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Within the text of HR 1094, these are legally human lives, so I would imagine that they should be treated like any other human death. How and why did it happen? Who is responsible? Can a woman be put in jail if she has a miscarriage and it is found that she was drinking caffeine every day while pregnant? Would that be murder since it is common knowledge that caffeine increases the risk of miscarriage? This is the can of worms that I am referring to, but perhaps someone with more legal experience than I, can tell me if I am wrong in being concerned about this? I think you're probably right, but it still tells me something about him that I don't like. Other than that, I do like his ideas on most issues. And it's unlikely I'll find a candidate who I agree with 100% on everything.

You will never find anyone who agrees with you on everything. e.g. I love Bill Maher, even though he is wrong about gun control. Of the declared candidates, only Gravel, Paul, and Kucinch have their heads on straight regarding our biggest problem: Iraq. Gravel hasn't had much luck raising funds, Kucinich isn't being taken seriously, IMHO, just because of his small stature. I don't agree with Paul on abortion or universal healthcare, but he is right about EVERYTHING else, and he has momentum building, so he looks like the best bet to me."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. livendive 8 #33 November 7, 2007 Quote He's saying the FEDERAL government should stay out of it. Not protect abortion, nor ban abortion. Leave it up to the states. That's one thing he's saying. Another thing he's saying is that he introduced legislation that would have the government define life as beginning at conception. These two statements are at odds with each other, as the latter is not staying out of it and leaving it up to the states. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Blues, Dave why? if murder is legislated and dealt with on the state level, then his proposed legislation (which would have a PR effect of comparing abortion to murder - but STILL up to the state to decide HOW it fits the more contemporary definition) aligns also with leaving it up to the states I don't see the statements "at odds" with his abortion position, I just see the legislation as moot to his abortion position. But, legislators NEVER just put out impotent proposals to reflect some interest groups platforms..... ... With the HR statement, he is laying the groundwork for defense of the position that the FEDERAL government should not step in to protect abortion rights. In this way the FEDERAL government wouldn't fight for either side, and if you wanna fight for or against abortion rights, you would have to do it on the state level.
