jpjc2000 0 #1 November 2, 2007 Orme, Tn.-another great union success story from back in the day! Unions have their place, but this seems to be the end result even in current times, more often than not. At least they are a great voting base for one political party... -------------------------------------------------------------- """During its peak in the 1930s, Orme (rhymes with "storm") boasted a population of thousands, a jail, three schools and a hotel. But those boom times are long gone. After the coal miners went on strike in the 1940s, the company shut down the mine and the town has never been the same. Not a single business is left in Orme. The only reminder of the town's glory days is an aging wooden rail depot that sits three feet above the eerily quiet streets. Although changes are coming — cable TV arrived just a few years ago — cell phones still don't work there. The main road into town is barely wide enough for two cars to pass one another. Dogs wander the streets, farm animals can be heard all around town, and kids gather outside the one-room City Hall to ride their bikes. "It's like walking back in time. It's Never-Never Land here," says Ernie Dawson, a 47-year-old gospel singer who grew up in Orme."""
kelpdiver 2 #2 November 2, 2007 so why did they strike? Maybe they're better off at a different coal mine than this one.

lawrocket 3 #7 November 2, 2007 Yep. Look at Eastern Airlines. Eastern was done in in large part by labor unrest and strikes. Many point to it as an example of the ability of a union to prevent a profitable non-union airline from existing. yet other, like me, look at the tens of thousands of people left wihtout jobs as a result of it. My wife is hotter than your wife.
kschilk 0 #8 November 2, 2007 Once upon a time, unions had their place. They were needed, they were effective and a lot of good worker protection legislation came primarily as a result of their influence. It seems, however, that they have run their course and have lataly become more of a liability, than an asset."T'was ever thus."

Try and look at the source and not try to always use the union as a punching bag.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

I know he and the union he was a part of didn't help matters in the least.Provoking a reaction isn't the same thing as saying something meaningful. -Calvin
