Obama showing his sense of patriotism and respect

Recommended Posts

Almost as bad as Sen. Obama's disrespect is the singer's inability to sing the Star Spangled Banner with respect as well.

People that ad lib the National Anthem to try and "jazz it up" seriously annoy me. B|

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

I somewhat expected that it's automatic (muscle memory?) for Americans, this is a disappointing scene to see.:| Even if his mind was elsewhere...it's disappointing.
Gawain, I agree. Artistic license is one thing (that I totally believe in) but the national anthem is a song that belongs to the people of this country and shouldn't be too loosely interpreted. I don't mind instrumental versions, but the garbage that ranges from Roseanne Barr to Aaron Neville.
I wonder if Obama's apologists will suggest it's too overt, like wearing a flag pin?

Counterpoint:

Leave the guy alone.

Respect for the flag leads to Patriotism. Patriotism leads to Nationalism. Nationalism leads to Intense Nationalism. Intense Nationalism leads to things like Nazism. So don't act like a semi-literate, drunk-assed-redneck Nascar fan and put your hand over your heart during the National Anthem.

That's what my leftist professor in college SEEMED to be saying anyway, but I was drunk at the time, so who knows?

How pathetic! He was obviously mis-filmed. He clearly meant something else when you watch the entire video, instead of just taking that one clip out of context to smear him. It's sad you will slam someone who has done so much for our troops. Indeed, it's clear that YOU hate our troops - and America!

Okay, I laughed at that.

What's the big deal, other than that the singer sucks?

Singer? There was a singer? I thought they were castrating someone without anaesthetic.

No kidding. That was nasty. Perhaps Mr. Obama was diging his fingernails into his thighs because of the torture. I know I would have been.

Ok, just waiting for the usual suspects to explain this as no big deal.>:(

And that piece of shit wants to be POTUS

So, can anyone explain to me why this is a big deal?

Or even any kind of deal at all?

I mean seriously, so what?

United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171

§171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

Why should those Palace Guards with the big fuzzy hats spend their days standing at attention? After all, it's only protocol. They should be permitted to slouch, smile and make funny faces at the passing crowd.

Hey Randy...you were right...see above... :S

Go on then, explain how not putting his hand over his heart makes Obama an unpatriotic piece of shit.

The way I see it, patriotism is how someone thinks about their country and what they do for their country. The posture one adapts while a song is playing is not patriotism. The way one handles a piece of cloth is not patriotism. What rights does it protect? What people does it defend? What sacrifice is made by the person standing a certain way?

When a gesture of respect is institutionalised to the extent that one must carry it out or face a public backlash then it become meaningless psuedo-patriotism. How can you know whether someone does it because they want to or because they have to?

When it reaches the stage where not performing a simple gesture can cause a serious presidential candidate to be dismissed out of hand as an unpatriotic piece of shit I think this fanatical devotion to The Code is close to becoming positively harmful! It's like Captain Black's 'Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade' come to life:S

So I take it you stay sitting on your arse when the band plays "Rule Britania" or "God Save the Queen"?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no (although I do respect my country enough to know how Britannia is spelt;)).

But you can bet that if I ever felt like I was being compelled to stand then my arse would stay firmly planted. And thats my whole point - when you have to do something in order to avoid having your metaphorical lunch money stolen then what real value does it retain as a gesture of repect?

:P Firefox didn't like ANY spellings of it ...

Compelled to stand? No, even though US Code was shown above, it's not a law that it be done. It's more of a social blunder like not standing up for the Queen or something similar.
