Soooo, what happens to the people who inherit the family's farm? The wealth of the dead person is in land, not money. Should those people lose the farm?

Does anyone have good figures on what percentage are actually working family farms that have tax liability?

My guestimate is that there are a small number of very powerful stories that do represent unfair situations but that those cases represent a small percentage overall (how small is the question?) that could be remedied by an exception for true family farms and businesses.

Some States have already incorporated provisions to protect true family farms and businesses into their tax codes.

(Of course, if one is opposed to all inheritance taxes, it's a non-sequitor.)

Why should inheriting a valuable farm or business be treated any differently from inheriting the same value in stocks, antiques, or cash?

As an aside, right now the first $2million in assets are exempt anyway, so very few cases of hardship are occuring here.

It has nothing to do with hardship. You simply want to take away what has been earned and give it to someone else. That is your postion (not directly stated) and all you have to do is admit it. You are a fiscal socialist. Not a name, PA or attack. Simply a fact. I do not agree with punishing (via taxation) hard work and good business decisions to build wealth. You do.

It seems you oppose ALL taxes. Not even Reagan went that far.

Taxes are not punishment, they are the dues you pay to belong to a civilized society. If you want to live in a tax free society, you'd better emigrate.

How exactly would you run the USA with no taxation anyway? Just borrow for ever? Enquiring minds want to know.

Leave it to you to avoid the topic and then make rediculas claims about your assumptions of what some body else thinks. Like you did to me, I ask you to post where I said that the US should have no taxes. And how the hell did you get to this from a discussion about inheritance tax sir.

:D I see you avoided my question. HOW would YOU raise the money needed to run the country?

And why do you ASSume that I want to redistribute wealth? That would be of no benefit to me whatsoever.

A question I avoided???????? You make rediculas ASSumptions (see I can do it too) and then pretend you aksed a question??:D:D

You answer mine and THEN if you can ask a question that makes sense I will answer.

Me avoiding your question??!!:D You sir, are the king of mis-direction

See post #80 in this thread. There is a question there, and it's not a pretend question. Those curly marks like this "?" are question marks.

I'll repeat the question for your benefit.

I did answer in a manner simmilar to the way you answered a comment of mine (when you asked me to post where I got the assumption) when I asked you where I said we should run the US with no taxes. I never said or implied that. Can you show me sir where I said that, oh, but you cant now can you. You once again re-directed the thread and set forth a premise in a question that is not answerable and in doing so once again avoided giving any kind of answer.

Nothing inteligent again. You cant answer. OK

You know YOU are the one that stated this, not I, so, how would you do it?

I will have to admit it is fun to see you talk yourself into a corner and then avoid the topic while in your typical mis-direct mode.:)

You argue against taxation at every opportunity, but won't tell us your alternative way of funding the country. We can draw our own conclusions.

Sir, we were talking about "inheritance" taxes or death taxes. I do not know where you got to "all" taxes. And, once again you mischaracterize my positon on taxes. Taxes are a necessary evil. Confiscatory taxes kill economies and give the govenment the power. Now, do you want to return to the topic we started on that was the death tax?

Misleading misnomer: it isn't a death tax, the dead person has no tax liability.

Please explain why an inheritance tax (with a huge exemption, currently at $2million) is worse than, say, a sales tax or the income tax or an excise tax on gasoline or cigarettes.

Because equities and cash can easily be divided up, while a farm or business cannot. They're not nearly as liquid. I gave some illustrations.

Inconvenient, maybe. But what exactly does that have to do with paying your fair share to govern the country? Why should you pay less JUST because of your parents' choice of business? And you only have to pay anything at all if the farm is worth more than $2Million.

So If I go out and Earn $1 Million, Pay all the taxes on that money at the time I earn it. Shouldn’t it be mine to do with as I please? I earned it. I paid the taxes on it.
Just because I give it to someone else, Why should it be taxed again?:S

Every dollar in circulation is taxed over and over and over again as it circulates within the economy. Your argument is quite illogical.

Nice job on using a tangential (but basically irrelevant) concept to discount his point.

Illogical.

His point is invalid. That's why inheritance taxes exist.

Your attempt at nitpicking is invalid too, as usual.

What is the justification of tax-free gifts, up to $10,000.00?

Beats me. A sop to those wealthy enough to make gifts of $10k, maybe.
