the grenades seem to be a bigger concern than 30 BB guns. It would appear that the '9mm rifle' was the only lethal firearm, and that's a pistol round trying to play grownup.

Hopefully the parents are charged for the lack of care.

The media is trying to make this into a bigger story than it really is. Thirty BB guns don't pose much of a threat to anyone. The assault rifle, grenades, and hate literature are another matter though.

I wonder if the grenades were operational. I just don't trust everything I read in the newspapers these days. Many stories are blown way out of proportion just to sell more newspapers.

It's easy to make a bomb. The triggering mechanism is the hard part. So, I wonder if this Psycho put them together right. Were they really functional grenades or just some fig newton of a journalist's imagination....Steve1

As far as I can tell the only crime committed was the creation of the small bombs.

The BB Guns are not illegal to own. The "Assault Rifle" wasn't illegal to own. Although I seriously doubt that the firearm was anything like a military assault rifle. It seems as though the media will label just about any firearm as an "Assault Rifle" in order to make it sound more then it actually is. The hate writings, although distasteful, are not illegal. This is just another over hyped media story.

There wasn't any ammo for the assault rifle according to a recent article - "The genuine assault rifle, for which no ammunition was found in the home...."

So the headline "Boy, 14, Seized in Plot to Open Fire at School" - must have meant he planned on opening fire with the BB guns and taking the assualt rifle along for its bludgeoning abilities. Not sure that really qualifies as a gun crime.

The grenades (if functional - it looks like they were hand-mande) and swords, knives would have been the only thing lethal.

Under the expired federal law a bayonet lug was enough to turn a semi-automatic rifle into an "Assault Weapon". Maybe he planned on a drive-by bayoneting?

A "Grenade" made in a plastic shell with Gun powder, Fuse and BB`s.. Would not be much more than a Sparkler when lit. (Trust me on this I tried all kinds of ways when I was a Kid to get this to work. Never did more than shoot Flames and Sparks for about 12 inches)

Talk about grandstanding over a Bunch of Toys. As for charges against the mother.. That is absurd. If that is the case they need to come to Georgia and arrest just about every Father in any rural area because around here just about everyone gets a Hunting rifle before they are 14. What is the difference between a Hunting rifle and an Assault Rifle? The stock, Oh and generally the Assault rifle is LESS powerful.

This reminds me of the "Arsenal" a guy in NY was busted with by an assualt on his house.

The cops were grandstanding about the bust and it turns out it was all airsoft.

you can't buy a firearm for a youngster. You can own it and allow them to use in under your supervision. Duty of care may have been failed here, but hard to tell given the number of exaggerations in the coverage.
