If one person drives drunk and kills multiple people, do we ban alcohol or cars? Great analogy. We should test and license gun owners like drivers, and register guns, like cars.... ExAFO 0 #102 October 10, 2007 The constitution saw fit to codify gun rights. Therefore it is (thankfully) very difficult to pass registration for firearms. Cars/driving are not a constitutional right, so it's easier to get registration/licensing laws passed. You'll change your tune if you one day become the victim of a violent crime. Sadly I have, and I will not give up my constitutional rights. DO NOT bring up Iraq or Healthcare. I will not discuss it here with you.Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW. kelpdiver 2 #103 October 10, 2007 Quote Great analogy. We should test and license gun owners like drivers, and register guns, like cars. I haven't taken a driving test at the DMV in the 19 years since I got my license. I had one vision test when I got Lasik done and needed to remove the corrective lens requirement. Since I did MSF, I only needed to do the written test to add the motorcycle endorsement. Buying a car or motorcycle requires a simple signature and address. You don't even need a license to do it. If you want, you can buy two at the same time! The process to buy a gun is already far more detailed and regulated.

Then with a simple test and license, I could carry in every state, everywhere - banks, schools, bars, etc. I could own as many as I want, no waiting periods, no limitations on magazine size or automatic status. I could import them from any country in the world, no limitations. No background checks, no mental health questions. Pay the fee, take the test, get the license. 17 year olds could carry legally - 16 years olds with a valid hardship. Get caught without the license? $100 ticket that comes off your record in a couple-three years. I say, "let's do it!"Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. JohnRich 4 #106 October 11, 2007 QuoteThat reminds me how the old Chief of the London Metropolitan police once mentioning a statistic: 'The vast majority of crimes committed in London are by blacks.' This was a simple statistical fact. The accusations of racism were deafening. Yep. American police chiefs have been fired for stating such truths. We're not allowed to talk about it any more. So it just keeps getting worse, because everyone is afraid to do anything about it. Political correctness will destroy us.

I guess it doesn't really matter to your average gun nut, they just want to spout on about THIER rights to own a gun, it's just tough shit for the people being killed by guns that were once legally owned and now have fallen in to the wrong hands... they don't care about the mudered persons rights, it's all about THEIR righst to have a gun, nobody elses rights are as important

Guns get used in 10,000 murders a year, while alcohol is involved in 20,000 traffic fatalities each year. If accidents are an issue, I want the government to go after the swimming pool, bathtub, and beach owners whose property claims 3000 lives each year versus 1000 for guns. If those bigger issues aren't worth addressing (no one needs to drink alcohol or go swimming) I want them to leave my guns alone.

Even with licensing schemes in place how do you predict that someone will become mentally unstable? I guess that you could suspend licenses due to "events". So for example your wife files for divorce and your gun license is immediately suspended. I wouldn't want that to happen but isn't it divorce, rejection at school, problems at work (being fired) that form a major trigger for the majority of known shootings?Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
