SpeedRacer 1 #2 October 4, 2007 It seems like the media pretty much decides all on its own who the "front runners" are from the very beginning. Then they ignore & marginalize other candidates (with phrases like "longshot" and "a guy nobody's paying attention to") & only report on the ones they've picked from the start. They therefore perpetuate what they've predicted. On the Internet Paul is getting the most attention. But of course, the internet is not controlled by mass media. And I don't understand how anybody that's ever paid attention to a budget can even think Ron Paul's solution of doing away with all taxes, is going to work. Sure it sounds good initially (I mean, who wouldn't want 33% more money in their pocket?), but I've never understood how it could possibly pay for basic government services as required in the U.S. Constitution. Things like roads, water and the military.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
AdamLanes 1 #5 October 4, 2007 I am actually a proponent of the Fair Tax. I do not intend to speak for Ron Paul, but I do believe he does not intend to "do away with all taxes", mainly the Federal Income tax and the IRS. You will still be liable for state and local taxes, as well as the gasoline tax which generates the revenue for roads. The federal government will still generate revenue in the form of taxes from sources other than income, similarly to how the government did it before the enactment of the income tax amendment in 1913. This is a president, not a dictator. He'll have to compromise on some things. I think of a president's positions based more on a GENERAL TREND of where we want things to go. The most extreme positions won't get realized anyway: that's the nature of democracy. If you think that in GENERAL government has gotten too big & controlling & intrusive, in both foreign & domestic affairs, then Ron Paul would be a good candidate. The most extreme positions won't get realized anyway: that's the nature of democracy. Hardly! The President is actually free to do quite a bit without regard to popular demand if it doesn't matter to him. Look at the differeces between Administrations that seem to be run as if bound by polling data and others that don't seem to care at all. I don't want to take this into a GWB bash, but our current Administration is a perfect example of not doing what the general trend of popular opinion wants us to do. If somebody wants to make a dig here at, perhaps, Clinton (42) of being the opposite, I won't disagree either. But they are good examples of how the President can basically do whatever the heck he wants as far as manipulating certain events in either case. As for "extreme" positions, my view is that in at least one instance, there is already at least one group I would consider to be "extreme" in their views that has far too much say in what's happening in Washington as it is. It certainly helped put the President into power and GWB claims to be on a mission from God as a result. To me, the danger is already present.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
SpeedRacer 1 #8 October 4, 2007 QuoteHardly! The President is actually free to do quite a bit without regard to popular demand if it doesn't matter to him. Actually you do have a point here. But I would say that much of what you're saying regards foreign policy. As Ted Koppell in one discussion once said, that foreign policy is the one area where a President has the most personal leeway. anyway, that makes just one more reason to vote for Ron Paul. He's one of the few candidates out there that's facing reality when it comes to foreign policy.
