Do video cameras help solve crimes?

Recommended Posts

News:
Tens of thousands of CCTV cameras, yet 80% of crime unsolved

London has 10,000 crime-fighting CCTV cameras which cost £200 million, figures show today.

But an analysis of the publicly funded spy network, which is owned and controlled by local authorities and Transport for London, has cast doubt on its ability to help solve crime.

A comparison of the number of cameras in each London borough with the proportion of crimes solved there found that police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any.

In fact, four out of five of the boroughs with the most cameras have a record of solving crime that is below average...

They would be better off spending that money on real police officers!

That man killed that little boy, pic made during train ride, where the killer contacted his victim.

Camera was advantageous - or not? Killer was caught w/in few days.

edited to add:
Pic in the middle to be enlarged, showing the little one and his killer.

John, please write a thread about France. They're smug, and they need an ass-kicking.

With the increase use or interest in using cameras in the US, this is a relevant topic to discuss.

A few dozen were installed in the bad parts of San Francisco, but apparently have such poor resolution that they accomplish little besides face dressing, as well as intruding into the lives of those who do nothing wrong.

and probably spell even worse...;)

Me too, so we're 2 -:P.

The German article plus pic in the middle of it just shows how such a normal, usual and unnoticed thing like that monitoring camera helped to quickly find a killer. Of course, it did not prevent that horrible incident.

(BTW: Since those monitoring cameras do join passengers in our public passengers traffics, bratty demolition of trains went down, that's one success, right?)

But, it answers JR's question in his thread title, that's all.

If it is crimes by the police no, if by regular people.....maybe.

Crimes by the police...the poor retired teacher in New Orleans....can't get much better video than that except in porn, and bam, the cops get off-pun intended![:/]
