WASHINGTON — In a preview of his report to Congress next week, Gen. David Petraeus on Friday expressed disappointment in the lack of progress toward political reconciliation in Iraq. Administration officials said he wants to return to Washington for another assessment in six months to allow more time for Iraqi politics to catch up with what Petraeus regards as rapidly improving security conditions.

WEll that should only cost about....oh lets say... another 500 American families to spend the rest of their lives without their loved one who will die there.

At least the other 1000 families that do get their loved one's back..maimed and broken.... or the ones with PTSD that are ticking time bombs just waiting to go off.. is just a small price to pay for Mr Bush and Mr Cheney and their families and good buddies profits.

Well, I trust Gen. Petraeus. I can't say that about our elected officials. He has a particular insight into the nature of that conflict. His published doctrine is quite sound.

My opinion overall, matches Jeanne's (she had a bulleted post a while back re: leave them to their own devices - that was spot on), however - I am a professional warrior - I go where the work is.

If the General needs me and mine for another 6 months...

My bags are already packed.

Forward in the saddle...

Timetables and metrics don't apply here, and clueless, impatient liberals simply don't get it. Never have, never will.

The Malayan Emergency (1948 - 1960) took TWELVE YEARS TO COMPLETE, but guess what?

That was a war (read - "Insurgency") that the Communists LOST.

Kindly read "The War of the Running Dogs".

Who won, then?

If we pulled out NOW, which song and dance would we be hearing from the glass half empty liberals? Oh, the humanity of idiots killing one another?

It is GOING to happen.. when we do leave. Personally at this point I for one dont think one more American life is worth all of the SHIA and SUNNI shitheads who are GOING to do it anyway. Pull the fuck out and let them go for it like they want to do. All we are doing at this point is interceeding in a centuries old religious war. Fine.... let em get it on ...WITHOUT us in the middle. If they form a form a government that is actually a threat to us.. then go in and kick the fuck out of their asses again..

That is what our military is VERY GOOD at... not being policemen.

They are going to resolve their own borders with a Kurdistan.... a ShiaStan.....and a Sunnistan.... fine.. let them....This is something our completely incompetent administration is incapable of understanding.. ALL they see are the DOLLAR signs they thought they were going to make off the oil from their buddies in the oil industry...... the people actually paying the bill for their greed is our young people in the military and their families.

Oh I would add this ...for all the right wing fucknuggets who support this crap... make sure the
Iraqui government will hire you as independent contractors if you dig war so much.. and get your asses to Iraq.

Do you really think we're going to leave Iraq anytime within the next ten years?
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Yes.. the American people are fed up with incompetent leadership that got us there..

Now.. IF the Administration with the failed leadership that you love so much cooks up something to subvert the coming elections then yes I think we will be staying.......now that will NOT surprise me.... then let the cards fall as they come. They will need to bring the troops home to support keeping them in power

So, let me see, if we pull out now and they rip each other apart it's GWB' fault?

If Hillary becomes pres. and pulls them out and it falls apart, it's still GBW' fault?

Ultimately, yes. He broke, he bought it. The extent to which it would be Hillary's fault would depend on the circumstances in which she decided to withdraw, and what she did up to that point, but ultimate responsibility falls on the man responsible for starting the damn thing in the first place.

Yea, and she'd be playing that card until the end of her presidency, four years later.

Well, if people like you were there trying to blame her for Iraq then yeah, I guess she probably would play that card and rightly so.

I'm done feeling bad for the military. Anyone there now chose to be there. If you don't want to die in Iraq, stay out of the military.

Unless Ron Paul becomes the next president, no way in hell.

This war was designed from the start to be an indefinite one, under deliberately false pretexts. There's too much money to be made on this war (at your expense and mine) to stop it anytime soon.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Iraq didn't attack the Cole. In fact, Iraq has never attacked the United States. The US has, however, attacked Iraq several times.

It was an act of war but there was absolutely no response from Clinton. That blood is on his hands because he never wanted to stir the pot or rock the boat.
Maybe you should ask yourself where the MiddleEast would be right now if we hadn't stopped SH in Kuwait. You can bet it wouldn't be pretty.

Bullshit. Just because he didn't waltze into a country that didn't attack us doesn't mean they did nothing but he is also to blame none the less to an extent and so are the presidents before him but mostly this mess is of the making of george bush for jumping into Iraq when the threat is elsewhere.

Where is the ME now? I doubt that it would be worst. Bush attacking an non-threatening country only pushed the turmoil to a higher level than before. It is our presence that keepe the anti-american sentiment fueled. Our country needs to stop meddeling with the internal affairs of other nations and tend to it's own problems
