DaGimp 0 #1 September 8, 2007 No matter what size nor material its made of, do you feel that it should be given the same respect as any other flag? Not to be burned or touch the ground, if people remove their hats and cover their hearts, if soldiers, old and new, stand and salute it, it is still the symbol of the freedom and sacrifice that many have strived to preserve for this Nation?"Professor of Pimpology"~~~Bolas

pmw515 0 #5 September 9, 2007 it is only a symbol; it is only a peice of cloth, but if people in this culutre want to venerate it, go for it. On the other hand, those in this culture who don't see it that way should be respected too.
shropshire 0 #6 September 9, 2007 But sometimes, we need a symbol and a powerful one at that. As it's inanimate, it does not factionised like [say] party politics (and therefore any person) does, it provides a mechanism for rallying folk; it transcends personalites and celebrity. But it does not do anything on it's own, but provides a catalyst to remind people that they are of one group and under it can pull as one in a common cause (be that a war, a tragedy, a sporting contest - it matters not what the cause, just that there is one). As for disrespecting the flag. That is NO WHERE NEAR as important as the positive catalytic effect. If a small handfull of people feel the need to burn one or drop it on floor... who cares.... We've got PLENTY more of them and if they run out, there's one in the heart of everyone who cares about their people. ... So, to them I say "Is that the best that you can do? Well Fuck Off and do your worst." (.)Y(.) Chivalry is not dead; it only sleeps for want of work to do. - Jerome K Jerome
hymandd732 0 #7 September 9, 2007 Look at it this way - when measuring your patriotism look at your contributions to the country; did you wear a uniform? did you run for office? did you participate in the process? Waving a flag registers pretty down low compared to other contributions.Freefall Hall
Gawain 0 #8 September 9, 2007 Yes. But... As the symbol of freedom that it represents, I defend another's right not to respect it. Offering respect is a choice, not a requirement. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
