lawrocket 3 #1 August 30, 2007 http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ap-obit-jewell&prov=ap&type=lgns The man who saved many lives by clearing an area where a bomb was ticking during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics died. He was 44. Many of you may recall the press on this - that the so-called hero was merely some redneck wanna-be rent-a-cop with an inferiority complex planted a bomb so that he could be the hero. The press fucking DESTROYED this guy for weeks. And for what? The story? The leads? And it wasn't true. Jewell should serve as a lesson about the press reports. We skydivers, in particular, are acutely aware of the "whuffo press" and the inaccuracies and slant in order to tell a more compelling story. So when we read in the press about some malfeasance, take it with a grain of salt. Wait till the facts come out. Think of Michael Vick - plenty of specualtion but nobody was really haranguing him. Until he pled guilty and accepted punishment. Only then did the public truly nail his ass to the wall. The story says that Jewell went on to give guest lectures at journalism schools. He personified the damage the press can do. My wife is hotter than your wife.
ryoder 1,590 #2 August 30, 2007 Yes, I heard the press is saying he's dead, but I'm skeptical. I'm going to wait a few months to see if the story changes.
