U.N. says Afghan opium crop soars

KABUL (Reuters) - Opium production has soared to "frightening record levels" in Afghanistan, which now has more land producing drugs than Columbia, Bolivia and Peru combined, the United Nations said on Monday.

Something I think odd is that when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, they punished opium producers and tried to discourage it. Now they are using the profits from opium production to finance their war against the U.S.

Odd? I think it makes perfect sense. When they were in power, they didnt want the local tribe lords to enrich themselves and possibly undermine their authority. Now that they _are_ the local tribe lords, game on.
