SpeedRacer 1 #1 August 7, 2007 The subject line is a quote from comedienne Kathy Griffin. All my life I have noticed some people are DUMB & PROUD OF IT!! They seem to have a great deal of disdain for smart people and get very impatient with people who "think too much." They don't want to spend time analyzing things too much, and on some level, seem to believe that solutions that involve brute force & bigotry are a sign of strength. What is the appeal of being stupid & aggressive? Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------

Butters 0 #3 August 7, 2007 QuoteWhat is the appeal of being stupid & aggressive? Some people believe that stupid people are aggressive because they are frustrated and unable to express their frustration by other means. However, it is difficult to explain to stupid people that being stupid and aggressive is a regressive combination and not a progressive combination and thus they should express their frustration by other means because they are too stupid."That looks dangerous." pirana 0 #9 August 7, 2007 I call it the Propogation of Ignorance. I think the most common cause is that some people who are intellectually lazy, or maybe just incapable of certain levels of complex thought; feel very threatened by those that are not only capable, but enjoy it. I have no problem with a person's level of intellect; but I do have a problem with those that reject or undervalue intelligence. A real eye-opener for me was a guy who felt so threatened by me explaining planetary motions to his son. (We were looking at Jupiter and I was giving him some of the lowdown. He was really into it, you know - he was about 10 or 12 and into the rockets and space travel and whatnot. I lover sharing that kind of stuff with kids). Anyway, so he walks away and is really proud of his new knowledge and goes up to his dad and points out Jupiter. His dad, in a very putdown manner, gives him the "That's not Jupiter, you don't know that, what are you talking about" lines. The kid hangs his head and falls in line a step behind dad. I overhear this and just think to myself, another inquisitive, potentially brilliant young mind put safely back in place by the Propogation of Ignorance. That kid is going to have to look to someone other than his father in order to grow to something more than the typical lowbrow thinker because his dad is threatened by his son being more knoledgeable than he. It's OK to be simple of thought, whether by intention or ability. It is not OK to willfully propogate ignorance." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

quade 4 #11 August 7, 2007 What I find facinating is that some topics are "ok" to be "bad" in. For instance, a stunningly large number of people willingly admit they have almost no knowledge whatsoever of how to solve basic real world math problems. Yet some of these same people can quote you the over/under on this week's big game. It's not that they don't have the capacity to learn facts or even apply them; they just don't. However, people get very upset if you even suggest they are functionally illiterate; even if they only have a 3rd grade understanding of reading and writing. It's just weird.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
SpeedRacer 1 #12 August 7, 2007 I was thinking more in terms of things like bigotry. Bigots seem to think that their way of thinking (or NON-thinking) is more REAL somehow. What sucks about the aggressive pride part is that bigots will be bigotted in a really loud & public way, and thereby embarass the rest of us. wmw999 2,602 #13 August 7, 2007 The thing is that aggressive ignorance applies to that which is not valued. We all value different things. Aggressive ignorance comes in when you think that what you value is actually more valuable. So it's more about respect, and respecting others' knowledge as equally important. So to the carpenter, who knows why you don't want to use a particular nail for a given joint, or who knows when to supplement with glue, a customer not caring about that is aggressive ignorance. Because we all use products of carpentry. To the safety engineer, there is no nit too small to pick; it's what they do. So not caring about the type of coating on a bolt is tantamount to negligence. And I only sort of agree with rehmwa -- yup, the first thing in my mind was the picture I saw in Sunday's paper of the Texas redneck games. In Texas, most of those guys are probably Republicans . But liberals' not caring about what they value is seen as aggressively ignorant too, I'll bet... Wendy W. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

rehmwa 2 #15 August 7, 2007 So there we have it: "Ignorant aggressive bigots" are specifically those people that care a lot about stuff that seems piddly to me. Or those that don't care about stuff that's really important to me. ... VTmotoMike08 0 #17 August 7, 2007 I think that the intro to the movie "idiocracy" is somewhat relevant to this thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAYnc_-ddlw Basically, the movie is set in the future and the dumbest people of society have reproduced in far great numbers than the average person and... well go rent it, its somewhat mind numbingly stupid but also a good laugh. Further, if people actually knew anything about the math behind gambling, do you think they'd actually gamble? Gambling is . . . a sucker's game . . . mostly participated in by those that don't understand the simple math designed to keep them from ever winning in the long run. That's why they don't allow the use of computers in casinos. It takes away their mathematical advantage.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
