YouTube Debate Not Respectful Enough for Romney to Particpate

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said Friday that he will not participate in a debate on Sept. 17 co-sponsored by CNN and YouTube, calling the debate not "respectful" enough to be part of the process of selecting a presidential nominee.

Personally, I think the YouTube debate was a great idea. The voting people asking the questions, rather than Journalists preparing the questions and the candidates getting to review them to formulate a canned response.

Sumpin about "We the People" comes to mind.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Did you see how some of "the people" were asking questions? He may be on to something.

I did watch the whole thing and agree with you that some of the questions were, "OK, how'd you get past the screeners?" But, for the most part, I do view it as a good supplement to the standard debate format (not in lieu of). Let's mix it up. I want to see how they "think on thier feet." So, how long before we see Max running for Congress or sumpin? Ever thought about it?

Allow me to answer that question this way: The Legislative Branch does not hold my interest at all. ;)

Don't you think that a presidential candidate having a serious conversation with Frosty the Snowman about global warming is just a little over the top?

I agree. The anarchy of the web is no place for intelligent debate.

Any yahoo can get in the debate and say anything they want - this is a pointless waste of time.

Well- it their campaign and they can choose to do the debates or not. Since everyone started doing debates however many decades ago, it has just become another part of the freak-show we call election campaigning.

May it is better if someone opts out - maybe that shows they can stand on their own feet and are not interested in towing the 'normal line' that everyone else is towing.

Maybe America needs more people like that - folks that are not divided into 'dem or rep'. Right now I think both choices suck - I always feel like it is the lesser of evils.

I wish someone would just stand up and say what's on their friggin' mind and be honest, and NOT choose a party.

Better yet, I wish the American people themselves could see through the bullshit and spend enough time to research the issues and pay attention rather than 'tow the party line' or listen to the hollywood debates.

Sadly, this will not change any time soon. But at least I became a citizen last week, sent in my voter reg card and dammit I will not be voting for some wasted-ass useless politician just 'cause he sits on one side or the other. I plan to look at the man/woman, the issues, and pick the best people for the job.

oh yeah - they call that 'wasting a vote' down here

I watched part of the debate and was disgusted by what I saw (no great surprise, given who was debating). The mere fact that questions regarding Obama being 'black enough' and how federal response would differ if a mostly-white city had been hit by Katrina were posed gives credence to Romney's response.

I DO like the idea, however. CNN screening of the questions ruined what small portion of the debate I watched. Due to what I did see, though, I can definitely see Romney's point. I think it a bad move for him to bow out like that, however. He seems to be among the best of the bunch on the right side of the house. I enjoyed his article in Foreign Affairs - especially as contrasted w/Obama's article in the same issue - and like his health care reforms that have been enacted in MA.

It appeals to the kook left.

Any candidate running should not lower the debate for the presidency by aligning themselves with the You Tube crowd.

It's not about the "YouTube crowd;" it's about an additional format where average people have for the first time in a long time had an opportunity to ask questions directly to a candidate. I blame CNN for allowing some of the stupid shit (well perhaps greater than 50%) when you know there had to be a lot better quality of questions out of the some 60,000 uploads.

I think the YouTube format is/could be a good one and enjoy the university open-mikes. The canned journalist, read the question before the debate formats are canned. We keep asking for change from both sides od the aisle, but then are resistant to any form of change process that "might" give us those results.

Guess what - this IS the typical young voter (and some not so young), this is how deep they are, this is what they consider to be insightful and pertinent.[:/]
