SpeedRacer 1 #1 July 26, 2007 What is the point of the embargo against Cuba? It only hurts the poor, the people in charge aren't affected, and it gives them propaganda points to be able to point the finger at the USA & blame us for their economic failure. I say end the embargo, let them get some American consumer products coming in & some of their exports going out to us, when it becomes economically advantageous to improve relations with us the Cubans will soften up & eventually the people will agitate for at least partial reform & some degree of private ownership. I say, let countries change gradually from within. The embargo hasn't done much for us in the last 45 years so what's the point? NCclimber 0 #2 July 26, 2007 I agree. End the embargo. It should have been done shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, if not sooner. IMO the tricky part is doing it in a manner that the leadership on both sides can save face.
SpeedRacer 1 #3 July 26, 2007 we'll save a lot more face if we act now. Cuba has access to oil reserves. We shouldn't wait until that becomes a bargaining chip for their side. Act now & end the embargo from a position of strength. Normalize relations & let change happen in Cuba from within. In many instances the USA takes a hardline stance against oppressive regimes which only makes the people in that country rally around the regime/ extremists even more. We have been the most succesful when we used a more subtle, less bellicose approach. Freedom has merits that anyone can see if the people aren't frightened by having their backs against the wall. Fear promotes statism. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
TrophyHusband 0 #4 July 26, 2007 the best snorkling i've ever done was in cuba. i would love to go there on a vacation. i'm not sure if the embargo does anything for us at this time. i say lift it and start doing some business with them. life could be very good for cuba with our tourist dollars. idrankwhat 0 #5 July 26, 2007 Yep. End it. Last year was the 15th consecutive year that the UN has almost unanimously voted to condemn the embargo. I'm not sure who really wants it to continue anyway and I think NC's right. I think it's more about saving face.

freethefly 6 #8 July 27, 2007 http://www.fas.usda.gov/itp/cuba/cuba-faq.html I read elsewhere that the U.S. is the 3rd largest importer to Cuba. The embargo should end and open Cuba to further trade and tourism. http://www.usitc.gov/ext_relations/news_release/2007/er0719ee1.htm"...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black."
