Does Your Position on Issues in SC Affect How You Might Interact with Someone IRL?

I was just thinking about it. I've met a few folks from DZ.com, not so many that I feel like "Norm" in Cheers...

Anyway, I've met BillVon and Quade, and we pretty much have completely opposite views on a lot of things, yet that didn't bleed into our real life dealings.

So, I was thinking, have any of you met a DZ.commer whom you didn't like online, and therefore let it affect your demeanor with them in real life?

Nope, my arguments here wouldn't affect my attitude toward people in real life in the least. I'd meet my biggest opponent here with a big smile and a handshake. As much sh.t as I talk here, I don't judge people by their political or religious beliefs. I'm sure most folks here are plenty of fun to be around.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I don't really like or dislike anyone online... it's too hard to read nuances into words, there's more to communication and relationships than typing and reading. I haven't met very many DZ.commers, but those I have were wonderful people.

Naw. I might roll my eyes when I read what some folks write here, but it's a totally different world if I actually meet them. In fact, with one of the Spaceland jumpers who posts here sometimes we're probably more likely to say hi and chitchat at the DZ than we'd be if we didn't both post here.

IRL I have a lot of friends who are completely different than me and all with different things to offer. In fact, I think generally I'm more apt to have fun with those whom ordinarily have different opinions on "issues" than me.

For me it's more do we have similar senses of humor? If someone makes me laugh, typically I get along fantastically with them.

What I've learned about many in SC is often their acumen is niche. So while I might be fascinated by their knowledge and comprehension on one particular issue, I'm in complete disagreement on another.

Certainly the latter doesn't trump the former--one still has something to bring to the table.

I think anyone here that is really objectionably extreme (pick a direction) is likely here just for fun and games. So the ones that are the most objectionable aren't really showing their real life attitudes and are likely decent enough in person like anyone else.

That's the assumption going in.

Edit: but the wry and funny types (take vinnie or pirana or lawrocket for example), you can't fake that on line, but that's to their credit, so I'd end up being more receptive to meeting that kind of person because they are funny.

So there's a few I'd likely be nicer too as result of seeing their material here, but no one I'd be rude to without further proof in person that they are nutjobs - even then they can still serve as comic relief in person like here.

I wouldn't let anyone's political/religious beliefs affect my interactions with them, whether those beliefs were expressed in person or online. I do discount for particularly sub-par communication skills, especially those which are undeservedly vicious, hateful, judgemental, etc. As a result, there have been a few people (three, I think) who I'm not particularly interested in talking to in real life. Those people are the exception, and the landslide majority of folks whose opinions differ wildly from mine have piqued my curiosity and would more likely be greeted with a beer, a handshake, and a friendly "What the flying fuck is wrong with you?!"

i havent met anybody from here yet. but nonetheless, if you like someone in real life, just as a person, and you have differing views on an issue, do you turn away? i mean, if the bloke or the chick is just a pure ass.. but even them can be alright given the right circumstances.. i wouldnt really want to treat people any different than i do online, so, the answer i guess is a no!

I think with the exception of one person I would be cool with anyone else. A beer more likely a blunt and a hand shake is how i would greet them.
We all have different opinions and I tend to be much more expressive here on line then I would be in real life. But the one thing I can’t stand or tells me a lot about someone is when he or she is blatantly racist. Depends how big they are...... I've found that most people are taller in person too, so I'm reallt careful what I say..


The folk that I've actually met from here are really nice and we have a good laugh and made some great jumps (way more important). I hope to meet a load more over the next few years.

Not really, I take people as I find them. I have friends with whom I have totally different opinions IRL so I don't think it would be so different so long as people respect my right to my opinions just as I respect their right to theirs (even if they are wrong)

Most people I agree with or disagree with on certain issues, but in reality, most are single issues and we really aren't that far apart and can have a nice discussion with some actual substance and just agree to disagree.

Some people seem to be so stuck on one issue that every topic turns into that issue. I would tend to avoid engaging those people unless I wanted to talk about that issue or get info. on that subject.

A very few here have posted things that are so revolting that I would never engage them in real life - its just too short to be around people that have that much hate in them.

It does affect how I interact with people. Frankly, my best friends are all pinkos. I find people interesting when we have differing stances and differing opinions on things. My friends are my friends in spite of our differences because we are ALL adults about it.

Those who are overly emotional, or are prone to make accusations about the soul, heart, maturity or prejudices of someone else in a discussion like this typically do not do well with me - regardless of whether or not we are in agreement.

I don't care much about anyone's "position on issues in SC," but if someone regularly posts very hateful and angry-sounding stuff on here, then that would probably affect how I felt about them in real life. I don't think that anyone's "online personality" is much different than their "real life personality." (If it is, then they've got some sort of multiple-personality thing going on, and I really don't need any more psychos in my life. )
