JohnRich 4 #1 July 17, 2007 News:One in three people in the UK stash a weapon in their home to protect themselves from intruders. According to a survey, householders confessed to stashing items such as golf clubs, cricket bats and heavy flashlights to use in self-defence. And more than half of those people said they are willing to use the item as a weapon against an intruder if they had to. The survey also found: * Nearly one in five people quizzed claimed they do not feel safe in their homes at night...Source: GMTV Question: If only half of these people are willing to use their weapon against an intruder, then why are the other half bothering to keep a weapon, that they aren't willing to use? The survey is for everyone, not just the Brits. And a "weapon" could mean anything that you keep handy for self defense against intruders, from a gun, to a club, or anything else. shropshire 0 #2 July 17, 2007 I dont keep a weapon near by. I dont feel the need, the dogs would be warning enough (probably) and deter potential invaders........ I'd probably be to scared to use one anyway. (.)Y(.) Chivalry is not dead; it only sleeps for want of work to do. - Jerome K Jerome

kelpdiver 2 #8 July 18, 2007 QuoteQuestion: If only half of these people are willing to use their weapon against an intruder, then why are the other half bothering to keep a weapon, that they aren't willing to use? Distinction may be that they're keeping it as a self defense tool and will brandish it, but aren't going to chase after the person with it to attack the crook. Silly to worry about - the article's writing was vague and probably should escape your UK jihad.
Kennedy 0 #9 July 18, 2007 Wasn't there talk awhile back about making knives with points tips illegal in the UK? CornishChris 5 #13 July 18, 2007 Cabbage Soup Recipe 6 large green onions 2 green peppers 1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole) 3 Carrots 1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms 1 bunch of celery half a head of cabbage 1 package Lipton soup mix 1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional) 1 48oz can V8 juice (optional) Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc. Directions: Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray. Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot. Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot. Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot. Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot. If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now. You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need. Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Scoop 0 #15 July 18, 2007 I don't keep a weapon nearby as I don't feel unsafe. I am however equipped with two palms, fists, elbows, forearms, knees, feet and shins as well as a good solid forehead, firm set of teeth and as will probably be the case in that situation, oodles of adrenaline. However, I'm much more likely to sleep right through and wake up in an empty shell of a house

Do you really think she'd be better off with a knife or baseball bat? It'd just get taken off them. Scoop 0 #22 July 19, 2007 That photo is the most ridiculous, sensationalist, hyped up, dramatisation. Its got to be for an advert from a gun manufacturer. Surely! Seeing as we aren't allowed guns in the UK for protection its irrelevant anyway. Think of the damage the weight of a handgun would do to an 85 year old hip! Violent attacks in the home are almost non existant, not counting domestic violence. Its sensationalising a problem we just dont have. Saying that, I'd love to have the power to shoot someone entering my property unlawfully. But I don't feel I need protection. It'd just be a nice way to prevent them from causing offences to any one else in the future
mnealtx 0 #23 July 19, 2007 Actually, the photographer emigrated to the States from Russia. Apparently the Commonwealth doesn't feel that the weak, old or infirm are worthy of protection outside of using their fists/feet. >Violent attacks in the home are almost non-existant 23% of all attacks for 2004-5 per the BCS, all causes.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim.
