sundevil777 102 #26 July 9, 2007 Quote No doubt in my mind the Navy shot that plane down. If it looks like a duck, it probably is. Now, who here really believes a jumbo jet hit the Pentagon? I KNOW that a jumbo jet didn't hit the Pentagon. It was a 757, a single aisle aircraft with the same diameter as a 737. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
pirana 0 #27 July 9, 2007 Also not mentioned explicitly is that the conspiracy nuts have a pattern of: 1 - Asking questions, but not waiting for or recognizing the obvious and evidence-based answers. 2 - Quickly supplying the answers they were looking for. Some of their preselected answers are possible , . . . barely; but again, usually not supported by any evidence. 3 - From their own answers to their own questions, they then draw conclusions. So it goes like this: "How could that tank of fuel possibly ignited?" (Asked after it has been thoroughly explained). "It could have been a missle." "I heard someone say that someone they know says it looked like a missle." "I conclude it was a missle, and therefore there must be a cover-up in play, and therefore it must be the CIA/FBI." Fabulous logic." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Because it's terrifying to some people that a mechanical failure (or a few people with knives, or a colorless, odorless gas we release, or a bad driver, or a stupid mistake) can cause that sort of disaster. If it's an organized evil conspiracy, well, people can live with that sort of threat; it's one our popular culture has prepared them for. But to think you could die because of bad wiring? That's unacceptable. This happens a lot. Witness the JFK conspiracy theories. It couldn't be just one man who hurt us so much as a country! Or the 9/11 theories. It couldn't be that a handful of boxcutting wielding lunatics could attack us like that! Or even Princess Di. It couldn't be a simple traffic accident that caused her death! It can't be that mundane and stupid! In all cases, people with good credentials believe these things to avoid facing the alternative. Having experience with aviation does not imply common sense or resistance to these sorts of avenues of thought.

Funny thing is, there's people who actually believe that all 300+ Navy Sailors can be scared out of talking about their ship shooting down an airliner. Or the fact that a missing missile will not show up when offloading at Yorktown and silencing another thousand that's involved with the supply chain side of inventory. Some people and what they will believe! I suppose you think Armstrong actually walked on the moon! I also don't believe in the Philadelphia Expeirment and the Bermuda Triangle. I also believe that we have time machines, because the fact that they used Nineties Technology to fake the Moon landing in the late Sixties._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

There's also the factor of feeling like a person is in on something special, as well as other reasons. A great read on this stuff is Michael Shermer's (sp?) Why People Believe Wierd Things. Lots of good insights as well as documented research.
