Ex-'Grey's' star: Racism a factor in axing

Recommended Posts

http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/06/29/people.isaiahwashington.ap/index.html

I am curious what opinions other people have on this. Personally I suspect he is likely just playing the race card but I did not really follow it in the media. It seems to me that since some radio guy got canned for saying "nappy headed hoe's" and that girl on that other TV show got kicked off for making racist remarks about that indian lady (shilpa shetty), I do not see how this guy can say he was treated unfairly. Sorry if I seem like a cynic but I do feel he is crying wolf. Am I wrong?

After reading the article not only is he playing the race card he is playing the whole deck. If he did it once, and apologised he might have got away with it but he has shown himself to be homophobic which is no longer acceptable.

Bet you didn't expect that response from me now?;)

That was my take on it.

It would not be beyond imagination. Some people here divide everyone into two camps, libs and neocons, yet I do see that most posters can see things in shades of grey, and judge the issue's on a case by case basis rather than playing their wing. So no, your position here is not neccessarily inconsistent with your position on the other thread.

It was meant mostly in jest. Yes there are people here that blindly follow one way or the other and I skip over their posts but for the most I like to think they don't follow the left or right like sheep.

Turnabout is fair play I guess. He called someone a dirty name and that got him fired so now he's trying to turn it around on them. Not surprising.

Unfortunately, people have such a damn itchy trigger finger on their PC guns nowadays. EVERYTHING is either racist, sexist, homophobic, etc etc. Someone will ALWAYS be offended. Insanity continues.

Whats sad is that it's not surprising at all and it is all too common. I have been accused of being racially insensitive because I am somewhat jaded by the pattern I see where all too frequently when a black man is the architect of his own doom he cries racism

Actual racism or homophobia should be dealt with but he has thrown out this outlandish claim without witness or evidence.

The following claim of his is pure speculation and hyperbole without substantiation;

"My mistake was thinking black people get second chances. I was wrong on all fronts," he said.
His unwillingness to act like a submissive black at work was part of the problem, Washington said.
"Well, it didn't help me on the set that I was a black man who wasn't a mush-mouth Negro walking around with his head in his hands all the time. I didn't speak like I'd just left the plantation and that can be a problem for people sometime," he said."

What is truly unfortunate is that no reporter or talk show host will dare call him on this in an interview.

Been thinking about this. Over here it is now common for kids to use the words gay or gayer meaning bad or crap. Now I guess the useage came from a homophobic start but it has evolved from there. It is used now without intent of derogation of homosexuals. Is it now acceptable to use these words? Gay didn't always mean homosexual. Any one out there who is homosexual (I kind of want to use gay but doesn't fit the context at all) care to chime in? Your input would be appreciated.

I guess it would depend on the context. If he had responded to a specific situation by saying "this is gay" then fine, but from my understanding he used a more specific slur and it was directed at a gay co-star in a homophobic context

Do you know what he said? That would give context but all the outlets seem to be avoiding reporting what he actually said. I was about to try and define words that shouldn't be said but realised all my gay mates (OK I only have 2 that I know of) use them all the time about themselves. I guess context counts massively.

He shoulda just paralyzed somebody by crashing his car drunk. A brief stint in rehab and his marketability would have rocketed.

I'd like to interview the guy. Say, "Do you think Don Imus got a bum rap? What about John Rocker? Howard Cosell, maybe?"

I'd honestly be veyr curious to hear his opinion on them.

He would be evasive and say that somehow it is different and you were confusing/twisting the issue. He would say that you couldn't possibly understand because you've never walked in his shoes. He would play the race card against you and try to put you on the defensive. If all else failed he would end the conversation saying that you were seeing what you wanted to see. After the fact he would tell everyone that you were one of the racists out to get him. You would be the bad guy.

I'm sick of the "Race Card" crap. Certain people can't accept reality, and blaming their problems on racists is a great excuse.

Human nature to point the finger I guess.

Shortly after the original incident, a representative for Washington said "We are going to do our business in private, not in the press." Ironic, that.

Well he knew how wrong he was, so it is not a surprise that he did not want this in the public eye. By keeping as much of a lid on it as possible he also made sure that the public would be in the dark about how the matter was dealt with. Too much transparency would have made it harder to play the race card after the fact I suppose.

I wonder how he'd have reacted if a gay cast member had used a racial slur against him?

He would demand the mans head be mounted on a pole. If not Jesse Jackson and his band would be down screaming about how this is another example of oppression. As a matter of fact I am surprised he didn't get Jesse in on this.

At least we now know that in the hierarchy of supposed minorities, gay trumps black.

I think this just shows that the rules apply to everyone equally which I think was a good call. So, no I do not think that gay trumps black but it equates to black. This is a sore point to many black people. I have heard many a time that there are several in the black community who hate the comparison of homo-phobia to racism against blacks. I have also met several who have made this argument to me. Apparently the argument is that blcak people did not choose their skin colour while gays chose their lifestyle (their words not mine). Personally I just think some people just don't like sharing the special interest pie.

Everyone should share the special interest pie equally. Then we can all get preferential treatment equally.
