akarunway 1 #1 June 15, 2007 Spawned from another thread. I think legally right now as long as I'm not driving I can refuse to produce ID to the police (Gestapo). I see states fighting this gathering more steam. But w/ the threat of fund withholding (such as DUI levels and speed limits) who knows how it will go? Opinions? http://realidwatch.blogspot.com/ " The Social Security card was not originally intended to be used for identification purposes. Yet this is primarily what it is used for. "Construals" and "good intentions" are irrelevant. The issue is "What are the consequences? What is actually happening?" Im not so sure that totally correct, talking to my mother who was a cop, she had said that you should have ID on you at all times, its not a law,, but a officer could cite you for vagrancy or loitering,, being that you can not identify yourself when requested by a peace officer.. i guess from what i understand, it's officer discretion. EDIT TO ADD: of course laws could have changed now, so this could be different. since 9/11, hell everything has.
Scoop 0 #8 June 15, 2007 In the UK if you are found committing a minor offence where there wouldn't be a neccesity to arrest normally, if you can't prove your name and address you may well end up getting arrested until they are satisfied with your identity. In that respect if your a small time crook it pays to carry around ID. HOWEVER, if you don't commit crime then this is not required of you. Hmm, tough one. As much as carrying an ID card around would be a pain, paticularly as I already carry my photocard driving licence everywhere, if it was a way to prevent my identity being mistaken with someone who I wouldn't want to be confused with then I can see its advantages. Also anyone illegally in the country (of which there are many) will be easily identified and hopefully turfed out to wherever they came from. akarunway - If you have ID on you and a police officer asks for it I suggest you don't refuse. They probably aren't asking for the hell of it. Something must be occuring locally for them to be checking people out therefore by refusing to give ID as you state, although not legally required, just adds suspicion. You may find yourself being searched or something else for your noble act of defiance. I sit on the fence about the whole ID card thing though. I'm not bothered either way
Squeak 17 #9 June 15, 2007 Whilst i dont think it's a good idea. I have no issue with it, as being able to prove ones own ID is becomming more more a requirment for many many things. We has the same shit storm here a few years ago with "The Australia Card" a national univerval ID card. that was quashed, then a little later they introduced a TFN Tax File Number. which everyone new has. Also as of this year I think everyone has to have a PHOTO ID drivers license. So in their own way between the TFN and Drivers license they nbow have their "Australia Card"You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! shropshire 0 #10 June 15, 2007 Having an ID card is not the issue... having to carry it IS. I have a photo Driving Licence but do not have to carry it. If stopped, I may have to present it to a cop shop withing a week or so. I dont mind that. But I object to having one on me at all times. (.)Y(.)
