DoD braces for a fight with Pelosi

Pentagon officials are bracing for a fight with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) over her desire to allow lawmakers’ adult children to tag along on taxpayer-funded travel for free.

Pelosi wants them to be able to fill the role of lawmakers’ spouses when the latter are unable to make a trip because of health issues or work commitments.

Pentagon officials say the policy is that the Treasury must be reimbursed at commercial rates for children who accompany members on such trips, often called codels.

Taxpayer watchdog groups and ethics advocates said they were surprised Pelosi would seek more perks for members. “One of the things she was praised for when she came in was her sweeping reforms on gifts and travel,” said Craig Holman of Public Citizen. “It is very disheartening if she is, in fact, backsliding on this.”

In other words, it seems that it is OK for a Republican member of the house to exercise a long standing policy. It is an egregious abuse of power if a Democrat tries to exercise the same policy.

First of all, you imply that I'm hiding something. Since I provided the web link to the full story, that is false. Second, the reason I used only excerpts is because copyright law demands it - posting the entire story here is against the law.

Furthermore, you are guilty of the very thing of which you accuse me. You omitted the attribution for your quote, above. It should have included this trailer:

So you see, you posted it as if it was some kind of definitive statement of fact, when actually, it was simply an opinion by one of Pelosi's own aides.

The idea of a right wing controlled mass media is as stupid as the idea of a left wing controlled mass media. We have a profit controlled mass media. If they can make money bashing democrats, they will. If they can make money trumpeting every detail of Clinton's affair with an intern, or supporting the rationale for war without doing the slightest bit of investigative journalism, they will. Doesn't mean they're controlled by the republicans.

Likewise, if they can make money talking about the culture of corruption, or carrying pictures of burning oil refineries in Iraq, they will. Doesn't mean they're controlled by democrats.

All too often, members of the victim culture in both parties choose the media as their latest oppressor. "We would be doing great in Iraq/would have won the election/wouldn't have had such a big stink if not for that pesky media that the other guys control!" It's more an admission of defeat than anything else.

Kind of follows the US education system - down the tubes. News @ the level of USA TODAY - what a horrid way to learn about the world and events shaping it.
