Court uses Bush & Cheney as examples of expletive use

So you are for censorship of reporters who report on our government. Check.

Try message #8 one more time. Focus on the difference I draw between off-the-cuff remarks as part of a news program, and pre-scripted entertainment shows.

If someone is aired on the news saying the "f" word as part of some important news, I don't have a big problem with it.

But I don't want Mr. Rogers starting his show with; "Good morning you fucking little boys and girls!"

Fair enough. I would therefore encourage you to not allow your kids to watch shows that start off with "Good morning you fucking little boys and girls." Sarah Silverman would be a bad person for them to watch, for example.

(BTW not much chance Mr. Rogers will ever say that on his show - he's dead.)

Well, I suppose it all depends on whether you think TV reflects reality, or reality reflects TV.

I think that if we were all to refrain from using foul language in our daily lives, the use of it on TV would just fade away.

But, as some commentator said on the radio yesterday, real life is actually "R", not "PG13".

You can twist anything at all - it appears to be one of your talents.

If you say so.:P
Did you know the Federal Government blocked the NYT from publishing an article by Flynt Leverett (which is not to be confused with Mr. Leverett's former employer execising it's non-disclosure authority)... or that Colin Powell tried to coverup the My Lai massacre... or that opponents of a referendum to raise minimum wage in Florida claimed hundreds of thousands of jobs would lost if the effort passed.

Quote

However, I wrote nothing whatsoever condoning foul language on TV.

Not directly. Your follow up to "Everyone knows that kids emulate what they see on TV, and that's bad enough already" was to counter with an alternate example, followed by "Why blame TV?"

So you weren't dismissing/discounting the impact of TV on kids?

. Do you think people are actually taken in by your "debating" style.

I prefer to support claims of twisting the facts with actual examples. ;)

Sorry you seem to find that so unsettling. I can understand why.;)

So you are in favor of laws that keep journalists from reporting on what public officials say?

Go back and read my message #8.

Surely you jest? :o

No doubt there are a number problems with network television. But just because some are worse, I don't see that as a good reason for discounting/ignoring this issue. ;)

I guess I wasn't actually giving a reason to ignore the issue. I was giving a good reason to ignore television. But now that I'm thinking about it, I guess I really don't have a problem with allowing profanity on TV. Maybe it will get so bad that people quit watching it or parents may start paying attention to what their kids are watching and lock the most offensive channels. Then the advertisers, not some appointed government political "decider", will crack down and force broadcasters to change their content.
Hell, shit, fuck. Bring it on.

How much television do your children watch?

Live TV:
0-30 minutes/week. Usually 0.

DVD:
Maximum of 1.5 hrs/day total. Typically about 45 minutes.

Books:
Probably a minimum of 10/day for the three year old and the 8 month old gets to listen to all but usually only participates in maybe two or three.

So you're in favor of allowing words like "shit" and "fuck" to be used freely on entertainment television shows during prime kid-watching hours?

I am.

Maybe then parents will finally actually play with their children. spend time raising them, spend time entertaining them, spend time bonding with them, get them active, in stead of putting them in front of a television so the parent is free to do what he or she wants.

It would be quite difficult for that to happen seeing that Mr. Rogers died 4 years ago.

Barney sure could stand to spice up his language a bit. ;)

"I love you, BE-OTCH!"

Anyone catch the Dora spoof on SNL a few weeks back?

I'm sure the religious right and neo-cons are proud that President Bush's and VP Cheney's language was mentioned explicitly by the court in its rationale for throwing out the FCC restrictions.

kids on my grammar school playground were calling each other 'jerkoffs' and 'shithead' and often used the word 'fuck.' The FCC is not there to be a parent.

You are not going to like my thoughts on this, as it doesn't fall into the popular mindset. Yes, any word should be allowed at any time on television as long as the show is rated to show it will have those words in them. The FCC is not there to parent or choose when/where your children become exposed to the real world. That is up to the actual parents. This forces them to be active in raising their children and learning what their kids are watching....and then proactively choose whether they want to have their kids view these programs. Show ratings and parental controls on televisions help the parents out. That being said, show ratings must be followed and that is where fines should come in if broken. A children's show should follow a predefined set standard of 'safe' programming. Does the time of day matter? Not really, just follow show rating standards. If a show is going to be LIVE, then there should be the obvious realization that ANYTHING can happen during that time.

My conern is the slippery slope the FCC is on. How long before swear words start getting fines on pay channels, movies, or even outside of television(yea, a bit of a reach...but...)? Should the cashier at my local Jewel be fined for saying FUCK as she dropped a bottle of peanut butter during my checkout last weekend? Why is this any less of an impact on the children around her than if a reporter or someone on MTV lets the f-bomb slip. Are swear words really that damaging? No, they aren't. The power behind those words are quite subjective and if someone reacts strongly negative to them, children will learn from that.

Not every paretnt holds the same belief as the FCC on swear words either. Why should the gov't extend their own close-minded beliefs on how the population should be raised? I personally have been saying FUCK since 4th grade, had my parents take me to see R-rated movies as a kid (ie Creepshow), and even snuck watching HBO/Showtime afterhours growing up when my parents didn't know (there was no parental lockout in 82). Despite all that 'bad' stuff the FCC would frown upon, I'm quite the successfull individual.

Also, I do not want the close minded beliefs of the FCC to rob me of my entertainment as well. A selfish thought, but a motivating one as well.

Oh, now you're living in a fantasy world!! People taking responsibility for raising their children... that's what the schools and daycares are for!!!

Didn't you know that "It Takes A Village" to raise a child????

Did the FCC fine them when their remarks appeared on CSPAN? We really should but a 7 second delay on those congressional debates.

heh...someone needs to be watching them to get offended and report them....when I studied FCC violations in college I was informed back then that the FCC couldn't pursue action until the public requested it. Also, CSPAN is on cable only and thus has a different set of regulations to follow over broadcast air.

There is a good chance that someone DID report the swearings as there are groups that hold my beliefs and report evertyhing to bog down the FCC and to show them how out of date they are. Due to the FOIA you should be able to request a report on what happened to any of those complaints.
