kelpdiver 2 #26 June 4, 2007 QuoteIn fact, I submit that Britney Spears' recording, touring etc, has a larger economic impact than the Speakers. In the last 12 months? Well, she's at least sold a lot of tabloid papers and ad banners on websites featuring her crotch shot. Her economic impact, even when she was on top, doesn't come close to that of the House leadership, which spends a few trillion dollars a year.
kelpdiver 2 #27 June 4, 2007 Quote I don't mean to say that the law forced the issue, but government intervention (in a sense) did. I'm not complaining about it. If anything, it forces the executive compensation to be more directly tied into the performance of the company. If only that were true. Even with piss poor performance, these large option grants are worth 9 figures. If the strike price on the options actually moved at a 5% year clip (which is still poor for stocks), then the compensation would be tied into company performance. This nation has been blessed with individuals who have a dream mixed with great passion who have spent themselves in a worthy cause to do great things. . I hope you are not including Britney in this set. It is particularly blinkered to equate contribution to the nation with economic impact. Would you consider a Medal of Honor recipient less worthy than Britney because he's made less money? I'm not tying the two together, but since you are... No, I don't equate the contribution factor with economic impact. In factors of service to country, the Speaker has that one (compared to Britney anyway). Neither would rank high on my list of "worthiness" as you put it.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Guest #30 June 4, 2007 QuoteI think left-wingers don't much care as long as they pay their taxes. The showbiz pukes use the same tax dodges and shelters (e.g., offshore accounts) that the CEOs do. So what's the difference? mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."
idrankwhat 0 #31 June 4, 2007 Quote She says that there will be no more special breaks. Oil companies are going to be punished the most. Oil companies will be required to invest in technologies that she and government deem appropriate, or they will face higher taxes. There are so many incomplete assessments in the monologue it's hard to know what to address. But I'll pick the above. Why should the oil companies get special breaks such as multibillion dollar subsidies and tax incentives, especially during a period of record profits? Energy is a major national concern, one that dictates our international military and security policies. Why shouldn't the government dictate, through incentives, how it wants its supply produced if the goal is to lessen our dependence on foreign sources? Of course if the actual goal is to maximize profits for multinational companies and their domestic enablers/partners then let's just keep doing what we're doing. Would you consider a Medal of Honor recipient less worthy than Britney because he's made less money? No not at all, because the Medal of Honor recipient should be head in High Esteem and should be given a great deal of respect. The Britney Spears of the world get allot of attention because of millions of dallors spent on marketing. They also get a great deal of criticism self distructing. No one but the closes family members will remember the Medal of Honor Recipient because they don't attract attention to themselves. The Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan's of the world are important so that a watching world can see how two tallented girls with millions of dollars can distroy themselves, because they have no self control.
