mnealtx 0 #1 May 30, 2007 From the Daily Mail QuoteVC hero Gurkha banned from living in Britain 'because he has no strong ties with UK' His courage in the face of almost certain death earned him the Victoria Cross. Tul Bahadur Pun single-handedly stormed Japanese machine-gun positions during the Second World War. The Gurkha’s extraordinary act of valour won him royal admirers and he was invited to the Queen’s Coronation and had tea with the Queen Mother. Old soldier: 84-year old Tul Bahadur Pun, who earned his VC in Burma on June 23, 1944, after almost all his comrades were wiped out, is being denied entry Yet, despite his illustrious record, his application to live in Britain has been refused. The old soldier was told: "You have failed to demonstrate that you have strong ties with the UK." See the link for more... seems to be sort of a messed-up situation, though...Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
Richards 0 #2 May 30, 2007 Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb! When you look at the kind of people that many western countries do admit, it always baffles me the ones who don't get in. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
DZJ 0 #3 May 30, 2007 Gurkha infantry are among the finest troops in the world, with a fearsome reputation and a ferocity in battle matched only by their decency in civilian life. The British establishment's treatment of Gurkha troops is indeed an appalling outrage which disgusts me. However, I would imagine that this decision is probably part of a broader policy of maintaining some degree of parity between the conditions of service between British and Indian Gurkha regiments, so as not to prejudice recruiting. Probably also the same reason that Gurkha pay is considerably lower than non-Gurkha pay in the British Army - to maintain parity with Indian regiments (while the pay is high compared to Nepalese standards). Scoop 0 #5 May 30, 2007 Quotethere are WAY TOO MANY immigrants in the UK this country needs to stop admitting any more, if this is the start, then good !!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to take back Britain for the British Not by denying someone who's given more to this country than most so called 'British' people have. Our area is full of Gurkhas as this is where they are based. We have many second generation growing up here now. Ironically the influence our cultrure is having on their youngsters is more negative than the influence they make on us. A friend of mine was a journalist and went to report on the Gurkhas who were being sent back to Nepal after serving their time. They go back to Nepal knowing a British lifestyle and often get mugged of their retirement money when they return to their villages by waiting attackers. We need more people like them and deport the benefit swindling lazy British born pikeys. I would be much happier knowing my taxes were subsiding an ex-gurkhas housing than some neanderthal who breaks in to the likes of our houses while we are at work. We need to take back Britain for the British It's fine to say keep out the deadbeats, illegals, or the ones who make false refuge claims, but what is wrong with letting in the good ones? What is the rational for keeping out a man who served the UK heroically? Seems rather ungratefull. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

dorbie 0 #12 May 30, 2007 Shameful but so is their treatment all round. He should have told them that he was such a poisonous upstart that he risked political imprisonment back home and he wanted to come to the UK to spread his hatred here instead. We'd have laid out the red carpet.

First off you let in the VC's, then all the George Crosses will be whinging away saying "You let them in, why can't I come too!" So then we let them in too and it'll keep going all the way down the chain - before you know it we'll be opening the door to people who've only got an MM! pincheck 0 #23 June 3, 2007 Its shocking he had to wait Anyone and their immediate families of any serving Gurkha regiment should be given British or duel citizenship they serve a country not their own and in the past have died for it. This fact alone should mean that the country is indebted to them. Billy-Sonic Haggis Flickr-Fun
