US Federal Minimum Wage

Recommended Posts

Congress has voted to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour by summer, 2009 - an increase of almost 41 percent in the hourly wage.

I applaud the "no" voters who showed their willingness to put their necks on the line in support of US Businesses and who apparently read the Congressional Budget Office Report that showed the huge benefits of the earned income tax credit versus increasing the minimum wage.

Here are the "no" votes who are deserving of some accolades.

Ironically, this bill earned wide support on the Republican side of both houses, and the names that you would think would be in favor of a minimum wage increase actually voted against this increase in the minimum wage! Just look at the Dem senators who voted against it! Who'd have thought that the Dems would say, "FUCK THE POOR?I"

Isn't this something? I wonder if the Republicans will try to make political hay out of the Dems' wholesale snubbing of the poor.

Ahem. Some of us actually read the news.

I had a feeling you were going to bring this up...

Politically, it's a real rub against both Senators Clinton and Obama in their Presidential campaigns.

Personally, I don't oppose the wage increase, but I wish it wasn't quite as steep, or a year or two longer. With gas prices what they are right now, the wages are going to be an added pressure to inflation. The Fed is going to be playing interest rate games I suspect. Consumer prices are going to climb a bit, or employment will take a hit.

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Gee, Max. Why did you have a feeling that "moi" would bring up this little tidbit?

Is it because you know that I'm asshole enough? That I have the acute ability to spin it? That I can point out that politics makes strange bedfellows?

Well, the minimum wage is a big story, isn't it? I was surprised that nobody brought it up.

And don't you find it interesting that these folks voted against an increase in th minimum wage? And that Republicans voted FOR it?

Obviously you bring this up to smite those that oppose the working poor...you're also a lawyer, and therefore a socialist, but also support big business... (taking tongue out of cheek now)

Interestingly, if this also precedes the immigration bill as it appears to be written, then social security receipts are going to go up too.

I think it's also an effort to fund the social programs as the baby boomers retire.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh

What completely unrelated bit of legislation was it added to?

I think the laziness and general sneakiness of tying unrelated items together is one of the most irritating things about our legislative process.

(certainly dispicable)
which side added it? but that explains the voting better...
