I'm going with 5 years because that is the year (2012) when the whole Mayan-calendar-end-of-the-world goofiness is going play itself out, . . . or not.

Every woo-woo nutcase in the world is going to focus on that year because of 1) popular misunderstanding of the Mayan calendar, and 2) the fact that said crowd will glom onto any end of the world scenario like this like bugs to a an open flame.

We can probably count on the mainstream media to fan the flames more than we can count on them to distribute solid information. I've already seen some BS on the psuedo-science channels.

as to the 2012 Mayan thing, they were very likely far more advanced in their astronomical knowledge than thier counterparts in the last century. the Mayans knew very well that time IS NOT a linear function. EVERYTHING is a cycle, much like the seasons and the zodiac. which brings us back to 2012, the end of the great year, astronomically. we are moving from the AGE OF PISCES(I.E. the fisher of men) to the AGE OF AQUARIUS(I.E. THE WATER BEARER as mentioned by jesus is one of the fish stories.
