How high will prices have to get before the 'market forces' folks start to bitch? -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down. This is just shy of the silliness of that famous legislative move to change the value of pi to 3. First Class Citizen Twice Over
NCclimber 0 #3 May 23, 2007 Congress wants to sue OPEC for doing what it has been doing since it was formed????? Another reason for the rest of the world to laugh the US.
lawrocket 3 #4 May 23, 2007 Quote“We don’t have to stand by and watch OPEC dictate the price of gas,” Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers. Um, yes we do. Here's why. QuoteNevertheless, the House felt it was important to take on OPEC, the major player in oil production. QuoteConyers accused the OPEC engaging in a “price fixing conspiracy” that has “unfairly driven up the price” of crude oil and, in turn gasoline. No shit? And here I thought that it was their organizational mission and they've been doing stuff liek this all the time. 1973 ring a bell? QuoteHis measure would change antitrust laws so that the Justice Department can sue OPEC member countries for price-fixing, and would remove the immunity given a sovereign state against such lawsuits. That's nice that he wants the US not to recognize sovereign immunity under antitrust laws. But it seems that International Conventions would prevent that. Is the Democratic Congress now moving beyond blaming oil companies and now fixing blame on foreign baddies? My wife is hotter than your wife.
narcimund 0 #5 May 23, 2007 QuoteThat's nice that he wants the US not to recognize sovereign immunity under antitrust laws. But it seems that International Conventions would prevent that. If I wanted to sue OPEC too, what court would I file in? Would my local county adjudicator do or should I just walk into the supreme court and hand my plea to John Roberts himself? I'm sure with enough congressional wishmaking they'd all be able to claim jurisdiction, right? QuoteIs the Democratic Congress now moving beyond blaming oil companies and now fixing blame on foreign baddies? Now now. I think we can agree that overreaching and nonsensical legislation is agnostic. First Class Citizen Twice Over
DrewEckhardt 0 #6 May 23, 2007 Gas won't be cheap between the time OPEC reduces our supply by 40% and we finish democratizing the whole middle east.

Why am I not surprised to see Conyers associated with this idiocy. He's the village idiot for the party, coupled with considerable seniority. (In contrast is Boxer, who doesn't actually ever do anything) The fact that they're passing BS like this after backing down on the pullout timeframe pisses me off. Now apparently they're willing to give Bush as long as he wants to kill GIs, so long as he accepts a minimum wage increase on the military funding bill. Hardly the breath of new leadership I was hoping to see.
billvon 3,154 #8 May 23, 2007 >House Passes Bill to Sue OPEC We should sue the Iraqi insurgents while we're at it! And we could sue China for stealing our jobs. And don't forget to sue the Gulf of Mexico for Katrina. Just can't get enough of those lawsuits.

I have two more terms: Public relations Average voter Congress critters can get the positive publicity they want "Hey look! We're doing something about gas prices! " with no danger of passing the bill to bring suit which in turn angers OPEC and gives us gas prices high enough to be really onerous (People believe it will take up to $6 a gallon before our driving habits change)
grue 1 #12 May 24, 2007 Oh for fuck's sake. It's laziness, greed and stupidity that keeps where they are. The supply of oil isn't the problem, it's the fact that the left of the bellcurve NIMBY moron crew doesn't want new refineries built, and somehow efforts to build 'em anyway "somehow" get blocked. Even if the supply of oil was the problem, I seem to recall there being significant amounts of oil in non-OPEC countries… namely the US.cavete terrae.
