rhys 0 #4 May 13, 2007 Quote Good for him!! agreed, I was just in Zimbabwe and what a wonderful country with wonderful people, wildlife and of course one of the 7 natural wonders of the world 'victoria falls'. The place has really hit rock bottom. I would like to see Mugabe out, but not the American way please......."When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix
rhys 0 #5 May 13, 2007 .......Quote I'm expecting the yanks to invade Zimbabwe at any moment..... for what reason? Mugabe was voted in by the people, through force but he was voted in. There are ways to resolve economies other than invading them with military power and forcing regime change. Fortunately I very much doubt the USA will intervene. What is in it for them? Check out a couple of photos from Zimbabwe from a boogie there only weeks ago...attached."When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix
CornishChris 5 #6 May 13, 2007 I disagree with you on this. Whilst I despise everything about Mugabe and what he has done to Zimbabwe we should not use our nations sporting teams as political tools. Only when there are stringent sanctions against his country from your country should you then stop the teams going in. I was in Oz four years ago and they were discussing the very same in respect of the World Cup matches in Zim - there was outcry from some parts: The governments still deal with the country yet we force our sports team into some pointless gesture that will not acheive anything, in order to start some self congratulatory back slapping session. Bollocks. Declare war on him, impose further sanctions, cut off aid but don't get your cricket team to do you dirty work for you! CJP Gods don't kill people. shropshire 0 #7 May 13, 2007 Personally, I dont think that we should give that arse the propaganda that the Cricket would give him and he'll use any opportunity presented to hiom to justify his vice like grip on that poor nation. A bit like when that prick Rumsfeld, was photgraphed shaling hands with SH. It's amazing how powerful world class sport is and this should send the right message. (.)Y(.) jakee 1,596 #8 May 13, 2007 I think Howard's actually handled this fairly well. I still remember the absolute cock-up the Uk gov't made of the situation during the world cup. They didn't want England to go, they told everyone they didn't want England to go, they asked if the England team wouldn't mind possibly not going.... the one thing they didn't do was actually tell the ECB not to send the team. That really did put the ECB in the middle of a drawn out political shit-storm that they could have really done without, and also left them open to the possibility of hefty fines from the ICC if they did not go. The Aussie gov't making a firm decision has actually insulated Cricket Australia from having to worry about the politics of the tour (and of course the security concerns) and leaves them free to concentrate on running a cricket team.Do you want to have an ideagasm? dorbie 0 #9 May 13, 2007 How grubby is it when a PM dictates what a sport team can & can't do?
shropshire 0 #10 May 13, 2007 I can't agree. Both the PM and the sports team represent the country. It's important to send the right messages to this scum bag. (.)Y(.) Erroll 80 #11 May 15, 2007 Quote It's important to send the right messages to this scum bag. I agree with you. However, it is all to little avail when Zimbabwe gets elected to head the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. The person taking up this post, Francis Nhema, stole a 1000 hectare farm from a white farmer. The farm has since collapsed, and a third of the farm workers have died of illness and malnutrition. Now Nhema will advise the world on how to achieve economic progress and protect the environment!(Source: The Citizen).
ErricoMalatesta 0 #12 May 15, 2007 I guess the lesson here is if you carry out brutal repression against your people but you are currently friends with the west, cough Pakistan, India, etc then the cricket game is on, but if you are just that little bit more radical and unfriendly then clearly you are a tyrant and you get no cricket.
