Wise words indeed. Is this a free speach talk or one on global warming?? It certainly does apply. The point he was making was that the opposing viewpoint, however small a minority espouses it or however out there it is, should be protected. Not only because of the right of that minority to speak their viewpoint but also because of the benefit to others of hearing that viewpoint and being spurred to examine more closely their own view as a result.Do you want to have an ideagasm? MDMA 0 #5 May 11, 2007 Why isn't there freedom of speach on here? Why is it that a person can have a view point, and just because it isn't the majorities view point, they get called a troll and can get banned? can anybody explain to me why People say freedom of speach is so important, yet they them think it's ok to call somebody a troll and ban them? If you paid for it, you would be free to do with it whatever _you_ choose. If you prefer a public board with no rules, I recommend rec.skydiving. >Why is it that a person can have a view point, and just because it isn't >the majorities view point, they get called a troll and can get banned? Freedom of speech is nice but is not a right anyone on this board has (other than Sangiro.) If you follow the rules, you can post your viewpoint to your heart's content. If you violate the rules, you may lose your ability to post.

To me that does not apear to be the case sometimes. yeah, there may be a bit of bias at times, but I don't think anyone has been tosses that didn't deserve it. Despite frequently disagreeing with the powers that be, I haven't managed to get tossed in the penalty box.

tbrown 26 #13 May 12, 2007 QuoteWhy isn't there freedom of speach on here? The Forums are private property. I was recently asked to drop a political sig line on my posts, or else be restricted to Speakers' Corner only. So I dropped the sig line and started a SC thread along the same lines. Everybody's happy and I'm still expressing my (controversial) point of view. Freedom of speech is totally misunderstood. It's not the right to say anything anywhere. It is the guarantee that THE GOVERNMENT cannot arrest, imprison, torture, or execute you for expressing your views about the government and its policies. And that is all, the rest is just window dressing. Hence, Linda Ronstadt could - and was - fired and evicted from a Las Vegas hotel where she made some political comments about Bush and Michael Moore in the middle of a performance. She was not arrested, prosecuted, jailed, tortured, or executed for her remarks, just fired and evicted by a contract employer who owns the hotel she was performing at. No 1st Amendment issue was involved. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
