The Democratic-controlled House defeated legislation Thursday to require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq within nine months

This was a great chance to put their money where their mouth was. Much better than the funding bill BS.

They had a simple bill about one thing....Getting out, and they could not pass it? I really fail to see how this bill didn't get 100% Dem support. Yeah, Bush would have vetoed it, but then they could have claimed he didn't want the war to end and used that against him.

Anyone know why they could not pass this bill?

I guess it just depends on who's version of this story you read, but . . .

That particular bill was a long shot. It essentially was going to fund Iraq through summer and if certain benchmarks were not met (and it's HIGHLY unlikely they would have been), bring home the troops immediately. VERY few people thought it would get the support it did.

Here's the version I read.

When you have no principals your only worry is how you are viewed. That affects you seat in congress. You know, can make a stand, somebody might not vote for you. Doesn't matter what they think it the right thing to do. Political power is all that counts

"The bill drew the support of 169 Democrats and two Republicans. There were 59 Democrats and 196 Republicans opposed."

I don't understand your confusion here. What happened in this case is that the Republicans and a quarter of the Democrats defeated the measure.

It's long been known that some Democrats support the Bush position. Unlike the Cabinet and the GOP in general, the Democratic party is not one unified voice.

I know! There were no pricipals in my high school and that's ALL we were worried about. Mainly because we had no principles.

Dude- it wasn't an issue of spelling. I simply could not understand most of what you were trying to say.
I fuck up too when I type too fast and my brain gets ahead of my fingers. It was more of a joke than a PA.

It is Friday, after all.

In case anybody gives a fuck(which I doubt anyone will though), this budget BS is starting to affect the troops. the AF made an announcement recently that if more funding is not provided it will have to redirect funds from the finance system(also known as the system that puts the paychecks into the troops bank accounts so they can feed their families).

So everyone can go ahead and bitch and whine about how the other side is trying to stand in the way of progress in Iraq, meanwhile your AF troops are wondering how they are going to put food on the table next month.

Funding cuts ended the Vietnam war, and it looks like they will end this one too. Hopefully they can get something passed that funds the troops long enough to get them home safely, and maybe, somehow, keep Iraq from chaos.

But I doubt it.[:/]

The troops will get their money. Everyone has already stated that. Military payroll is probably one of the lesser expenses. Everyone else is getting their money, and then some.

If you believe the AF announcement, then you'll believe what I just wrote...

Because they are not willing to go down in history for defunding the war. That's the political equivalent of turning their back on the troops. They'd be slaughtered in 2008.

The democrats have known since the 06 elections that their "majority" is meaningless. Their first 100 days resulted in the naming of a library in Kansas or Oklahoma or something.

The war funding bills they have passed had to be loaded with earmarks (remember they were going to stop those) in order to pass them. The newest bill won't even make it through the Senate.

Congress does not have the fortitude to defund the military, they do not have the clout to force a withdrawl, they refused to see General Patraeus on his last trip here. Basically, they aren't listening to the military, they don't represent the will of the people, and their only hope is that things in Iraq get worse.

It's alright, their votes are on record, and they will rue that day.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

You act like this has never happened before, the powers that be have considered cutting combat pay down in order to create more funds for the war in the past. Not to mention that there have been times where the troops have gone a shortwhile at the beginning of the fiscal year without a paycheck because people on capitol hill wanted to play politics with an overdue budget. I know it's a longshot, but I wouldn't count the idea completely out, not with the way the groups up on capitol hill(both sides) like to use soldiers as bartering tools to get their way.

Next time do a little research before you run off at the mouth trying to talk shit.

Hope is not relevant - facts are.

Before The Surge US fatalities were running at 72 per month, on average.

Since The Surge began, US troop fatalities are 98 per month, on average.

That must give you great confidence in your CinC.
