AS1 0 #1 April 30, 2007 How do skydivers reconcile saving the planet with causing aviation pollution for fun? I say sod it, ignore the cardigan wearing environmental anti SUV eco-nazi knit-your-own-yoghurt types. This is too much fun to worry about something as trivial as the planet. leslie1618 0 #4 April 30, 2007 I do care about the environment, but I'm not worried about it. Long after we're gone, the planet will probably continue to thrive for another 10 billion years. We're only harming ourselves. If we were really concerned about that, we wouldn't be tossing ourselves out of airplanes from 13k. I'm all about having fun while we're here. Our time's almost up I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.

Or maybe not. This very interesting lecture says that the Sun is expected to have a 'mid life crisis' as little as 1.1Bn years from now - enough to dry out the Earths atmosphere and kill almost all land dwelling species. In a mere 3.5Bn years the Sun will be hot enough to make Earth resemble Venus! Amazon 7 #14 April 30, 2007 I look at it this way. I think all the skydive aircraft in the country in the air at one time are using less than what one commercial flight going across the country is using.

I was kind of hoping for a better strain of Bird Flu... .................................................................... I was at a staff meeting in our school, a while back. The subject was what to do with a student who had aides in our school. This was a "what if" scenario. Then someone got up on a soapbox and started off on how millions would die soon if we don't find a cure. And then with tears in her eyes, she said we have to do something now!.....About then I made the comment, that maybe that wasn't all bad. Maybe planet earth would be better off with millions less people. Anyhow that comment went over about as well as someone farting in church. I really think the problem is overpopulation. Sure we can all do things to cut back, but again that's not the real problem. It may have an effect, but overpopulation is what is going to eventually do us in. Disease, starvation, and war is probably going to bring our population way down. If that doesn't do it global warming will. I think this will happen sooner than later. It certainly won't be millions of years. How's that for a happy thought!I hate being so damn pessimistic, but that's how things look to me. Please tell me that I'm all wrong here!....Steve1

It may have an effect, but overpopulation is what is going to eventually do us in. _____________________________________________ The sad thing is, we're going against the natural order of things by improving medical care and feeding the starving. In nature, when the population exceeds the food supply, a chunk of the species dies off, keeping that population in check. Ironically, by saving individuals, we're dooming the species as a whole.I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.

Andy9o8 2 #25 April 30, 2007 QuoteHow about answering the first question? Sigh. fine. I reconcile being an environmentalist with using petro fuel to skydive the same way I reconcile using anything that pollutes for recreational purposes. I try to strike a reasonable balance. I drive a car for recreation, vacations, etc., but I keep it well-tuned so it doesn't pollute too much. I cook out on the grill and light my fireplace for fun, but I obey the local ordinance that prohibits burning leaves and tree branches. As a kid, I was taught by my parents not to be a slob and to clean up after myself. As an adult, I try to be aware of my place on the planet and pollute as little as possible, and I've raised 2 kids to do the same - and hopefully they'll raise their kids to do the same. I put cans, bottles and paper in the recycle bin, instead of just tossing them in the trash. And I generate absolutely no gunsmoke, as my cardigan-dressed arms are generally too occupied with hugging trees.
