I don't see why you think a gun is bad, but hitting someone with a bat is OK?

Both are weapons and both can kill. Simple fact is the act of pulling a gun is often enough to stop an attack.

So what if an elderly, frail, little old lady is being pummeled by a thug trying to steal her social security check? Do you think she should have to engage in hand-to-hand combat with a young, strong thug in order to defend herself? Why shouldn't she have the advantage of a firearm? Ignoring the ridiculousness you intended, at least she would have gone out on her terms, not her attackers.

I also reject the implication that she'd be forced to carry and attempt to use a weapon she wasn't comfortable with.

My grannies aren't so mentally feeble that they couldn't make use of the freedom to choose. Your's may vary.

Funny though, I have observed that some of these old people have more balls than many young people when it comes to deaking with thugs.
