freethefly 6 #5 April 18, 2007 Quote15 years.... land of the free right? The US has the worlds largest prison population. The US has turned prison into a for profit industry therefore they need prisoners. Locking people up for mj is an easy way to fill these prisons. Free slave labor. All the while, psychopaths are free to buy guns legally. Death toll: Marijuana- zero Legal and illegal guns- millions More people are killed by legal guns. You are more likely to be shot by a family member or a friend (alcohol is often a contributing factor). No one has ever been killed by a joint. Locking up people for mj is a waste of tax dollars. The "drug war" is a major failure and has not put one dent in curbing mj use. Each year more people who are normaly law abiding citizen are put behind bars for simple possession. Consider this: Since the Marihuana Commission issued its recommendations 35 years ago – * Approximately 16.5 million Americans have been arrested for marijuana violations – more than eighty percent of them on minor possession charges; * US taxpayers have spent well over $20 billion dollars enforcing criminal marijuana laws, yet marijuana availability and use among the public remains virtually unchanged; * Nearly one-quarter of a million Americans have been denied federal financial aid for secondary education because of anti-drug provisions to the Higher Education Act. Most of these applicants were convicted of minor marijuana possession offenses. Yet, a person convicted of a violent crime, including murder, are allowed to continue their education with federal financial aid. Today, one in every eight inmates incarcerated for drug crimes is behind bars for pot, at a cost to taxpayers of more than $1 billion per year. Marijuana users are an easy way to fill prisons. The prison industry relies on these inmates to increase prison based company profits. It is not about punishment, it is all about slave labor. champu 1 #8 April 18, 2007 QuoteWhat in the world is funny about someone getting sentenced to 15 years in prison? I guess the thought of someone being punished for a non-violent crime by being subjected to acts that, outside of prison, are considered the most reprehensible thing you can do to another human being is supposed to be hilarious. I know someone who was raped. I wouldn't wish that on anyone as a punishment for violent crimes, let alone something like this. The, "say hello to Bubba" attitude is appalling. ErricoMalatesta 0 #12 April 18, 2007 Just to continue the discussion on the rank hypocrisy of the U.S drug "war" . Across the board U.S trade agreements with Asia stipulate that the U.S must be able to sell and freely advertise cigarettes, one effect of this includes an estimated 50 million dead by 2020 in China alone. dropoutdave 0 #13 April 18, 2007 A good friend of mine grew weed when he had lung cancer. The doctors treating him said smoking weed, which helped him kept his appetite, was the reason he managed to survive in the end and beat the cancer with the intense chemo. Want to see him in jail still with lung cancer would you? Bet you'd stand at at his cell door and piss your fucking pants at his sorry ass. Plenty of people who had no ill intentions other than their own survival are in prison but no one is crying for their release. Yet at the same time there are countless criminal organizations who fund themselves through the sale of recriational drugs. There is no simple way to decide who should be punished and who shouldn't apart from drawing a distinct line in the sand saying if you carry it you're going to jail, and people still want to whine. kind of sad.History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower
 Shotgun 1 #17 April 18, 2007 QuoteIs anyone honestly upset that this guy got 15 years? Well, the guy knew the risks and chose to break the law anyway (after having two prior convictions), so no, I'm not upset that _this guy_ got 15 years. I think the law itself is ridiculous though. I believe the government has much more important things to be concerned with than people growing plants. So it upsets me to see tax dollars going toward this sort of thing. How much money is going to be spent to keep this guy in jail for 15 years? I'm guessing a lot, and I'm sure that there are better uses for that money.
