UCLA Student Tasered in Library

Recommended Posts

Hard to say from this video because you cannot SEE what is happening, but you can HEAR the cops telling him "Stand up or you will get tasered, again".

Tasers are supposed to be alternatives to deadly force. Instead, they are being used/abused as compliance tools.

IMHO , if these cops are just shocking the shit out of this guy because he's an asshole or he won't comply with their verbal commands, they should be fired and prosecuted.

When people passively resist its hard to gain control, when it becomes active resistance (like he ws just prior to being tased) its almost impossible to safely escort someone, especially out of a complex like a university. If the use of a taser was the only way that officer felt he could control the situation safely then thats his call. Any complaint as to whether it was excessive would be investigated by the courts.

Students from privelaged backgrounds are always the first to cry 'excessive force!' when they see any level of force displayed and are a pain in the arse when your trying to control a situation and you got a load of them shouting at you because they dont agree with what your doing. They all think they are clever and know the law.

Thats my perception

Thats an intersting point you raise and I think one of the best ideas they've had is fitting cameras to tasers so when they are deployed they automatically start recording. At the moment they are only issued to authorised firearms officers over here but with the correct monitored usage (like the use of camera) I'd like to see all officers routinely armed with Tasers

He was a muslim student who was angry about being singled out to show his ID, on his way out of the Library the cops grab him and start zapping. I think this guy was plainly singled out for his race and reacted understandably. Even worse for the cops, he was disabled.

That's not the story I heard. You have to watch when someone is feeding you selective facts to elicit an emotional response.

Stand up or get tasered. Hmmm....I think I'd stand up. Only a dumbass would choose not to.
In this country when a police officer is giving you a lawful order you are required to comply even if you disagree with it. You'll have your chance to speak later.
I'd say the cops did very well to keep the situation under some sort of control.
The only thing disgusting I saw in the vid was the kid acting like a spoiled brat.

If someone asks you to see your ID when you're at a computer terminal in a library and you turn around and say, "What? Cause I'm brown? Is that what this is about?" Then whether or not it actually was about race becomes rather hard to determine doesn't it?

This whole quibble sounds sideways to me. They ask him to leave but then grab him and hit him with a taser? He refuses to leave, states that he's bipolar, lays down for fear of what he might do, but then starts asking people to join his resistance?

Sorry, I don't buy either side's story.

It can be difficult to stand after you have just been tasered. Cops using Gestapo torture tactics when they could easily 'cuff em and stuff em' is the kind of thing that makes me dislike cops.

For the most part, cops are useless to me. They are never there to prevent REAL crime, and when they do show up, it's for this kind of useless bullshit, or speeding tickets, or to arrest someone for smoking a joint. I have a gun and know how to use it, and I am not a criminal, so for me, cops provide nothing.

The kid was coherent enough to refuse to cooperate and call for others to join his little "protest". This went on for several minutes , more than enough time for him to be able to stand.
Comparing this incident to anything the Gestapo would have done would show it to be pretty tame. The Gestapo would have brought him to his feet by wrapping a small cord or wire around his neck and using much as a dog leash.
Regardless of whether the kid was being singled out, thought he was in the right, etc., everything that took place was a direct result of choices he made. I feel certain the cops would have preferred he had just left peacefully. Nobody likes paperwork, especially having to convince others they were justified in their actions.

Even so, I don't see the necessity of force here. What was stopping them from simply dragging him from the library? If they'd done that, this whole event could be seen as a simple ejection and the student in question would look like a childish, whinging baby, rather than the victim of a (at the very least) questionable use of force.

(On a different note, I'm somewhat dismayed that this happened in a library. I always think of libraries as scholarly, genteel and civilised places.)

Beats having to repeat yourself indefinitely.
My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

Since the struggle isn't in clear view in the video, it is impossible to say why they chose to taser. Maybe he was striking at them. Maybe he was trying to bite. Maybe he was doing nothing but laying there like a wet noodle. I can't see how anyone, myself included, can draw any conclusions from this vid.

Unless he was being placed under arrest the taser use is not justified, especially to remove a student from a library.

They should tie that campus cop down and taser his nutsack for a few hours.
