Filipino Catholics reenact the passion of Jesus Christ.

Catholics in the streets of the Philippines reenacted Jesus' last hours of suffering before his death.

Some carried crosses on their backs whilst others whipped themselves and drew blood in order to purge their sins.

On Friday, the events will reach their climax on a day known as Black Friday, where devotees will crucify themselves. The event usually attracts crowds of locals and foreign visitors to the town of Cutud.

Here's a link--there's even video!

I don't know why, but every time I see this stuff it cracks me up. Not necessarily because I thing that people hurting themselves is funny but because it's about as surreal as it gets, at least to my way of thinking.

Obviously there is no need to demonstrate to me that they are true believers--all they would have to do is tell me and I'd take their word for it.

What's up with these people?:o:o:o

Was there in 72 and watched. Crazy bastards. Beat themselvees w/ glass studded palm leaves. Dude carried a cross nailed to him all the way to Manila. You tell me . shessh. Stupid fuckers
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

When humans set the Bible aside and follow their emotions you get fanatical religion. Whatever God Almighty meant for good can be perverted into something goofy/ridiculous or even evil. I think these coconuts are just plain ignorant of the truth. It certainly won't help them get to heaven to do these things-

Just burning a hole in the sky.....

The Catholics also invented Fat Tuesday[Mardi Gras] before Ash Wed. That way, they can indulge in the excesses of the flesh before they give it up for Lent.

You know, there are places where you could pay good money to have stuff like that done to you, and then everyone would call you a pervert. But do it to yourself and you're devout. Go figure.

A lot of religious fanatics use pain to trigger mystical emotional experiences. The American Indian's Sun Dance involves piercing your chest with bone hooks and dancing and tugging against the hooks until you rip them right out of your flesh, as well as cutting yourself up and down the arms. Sitting Bull did a Sun Dance to make a pwerful vision before the Little Big Horn (in fact he didn't fight in the battle because he was still recovering from his Sun Dance). he had a vision of upside down cavalry men falling out of the sky (no parachutes either). Guess his vision worked, judging by what they did to Custer.

In medieval Europe during the Black Death you had processions of Penitents who wandered around flogging themselves in hopes it would make the plague go away. And of course in Iraq and Iran, the Shiites have an annual festival where the men gash their own heads with razors, the more blood the better. That kind of fervor, with enough blood loss, would give anybody visions, it's part of our collective human heritage.
