DaVinci 0 #77 March 30, 2007 QuotePrevent some yes, but not the majority. Check out the statistics 75% would not have been solved by seperate landing areas or turn restrictions.... Preventing some is good enough. The thing is I swoop, but I don't want to be taken out by some jackass that didn't bother to look for me. And it has happened. I have had guys bitch at me since I got into the way of their swoop. One was above me with a sub 90 and did a 270. I was under a 90 and did a 180. But he claims *I* cut HIM off?!?!?!?!?! QuoteOf course you'll get zero argument from me that some is better than many, but look at the figures - they're not quite where a lot of people would like to present them as. So fixing some accidents is better than doing nothing. Thats like saying we should not jump AAD's or RSL's since they will only save a few people. And while I knew and liked Danny, Cliff...ect. They screwed up and they were both skilled enough to know better but did it anyway. As for your numbers, about HALF were caused by swoopers. I would not mind cutting accidents by half. Plus, I am OK with people who really know the risks killing themselves due to a mistake. I am not OK with them taking other people out. QuoteAnd for the record, I am very much FOR seperate landing areas. That is one solution I can agree on. I also think that maybe 270(+) swoopers should get out on their own pass a 270 is NOT good for any pattern. It is time to face it that swooping has become a discipline all its own. And maybe that means they need their own airspace.
ianmdrennan 2 #78 March 30, 2007 I'm not arguing that things need to change and get better. QuoteSo fixing some accidents is better than doing nothing. Thats like saying we should not jump AAD's or RSL's since they will only save a few people. I agree - and like I said I am for seperate areas. What concerns me is how some people view this as a 'fix all'. QuoteAs for your numbers, about HALF were caused by swoopers. I would not mind cutting accidents by half. Plus, I am OK with people who really know the risks killing themselves due to a mistake. I am not OK with them taking other people out. Remember, over half (if you count the 2 that from all accounts appear to be non-swooper) were NON-SWOOPER related. That's the important picture I'm trying to paint here. Give swoopers their own place, hell I believe 99% of us want it anyway, but to me this is about making sure that people realize that the 58% from the last few years were regular jumpers not trying to swoop or to big turns. QuoteIt is time to face it that swooping has become a discipline all its own. And maybe that means they need their own airspace. Once again, no argument. I think you'll find we agree on everything - I just continue (and will continue) to highlight that the problem isn't only in the swooper community...in fact, the numbers reflect it to be higher elsewhere.... Lindsey 0 #79 March 30, 2007 Remember, over half (if you count the 2 that from all accounts appear to be non-swooper) were NON-SWOOPER related. Usually fatalities are broken down into several categories....not just one or two. If even nearly half were swooper-related, then that's unfortunate. Still I wouldn't try to stifle the swoopers despite their disproportionate number of fatalities. What percentage of those that involved a swooper also killed or severely injured another non-swooping skydiver? Those are the ones that are unacceptable. When there starts to be a trend of swoopers killing people who don't share their passion, they need regulation from outside themselves. People here and there have been talking about "what to do" for a few years, but nothing's really been done. Now SD Arizona's done something, and folks are up in arms??? Well, eventually somebody has to take a stand. There's really no way for swoopers to regulate their own...no training or education's gonna make all hard-dicks conform. Good on SD Arizona for doing something that might make some real headway into this....no matter how unpopular their actions may be to some. linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Ironically, the ones who seem most upset by Larry's action are also the ones who have been on the "don't get USPA involved - let drop zones regulate themselves!" side of things. They are starting to do just that.
