That to me looks like a problem with the politicians, rather than the legislation. Isn't the US a democracy?

Of course there is a problem with politicians. They are politicians. But how does that change the fact that some laws area good idea, some are merely tolerable, and some are just plain wrong?

And no, the USA is not a democracy, it is a representative democracy. There is a very large difference. Just becuase the majority of the people want something that doesn't mean they are going to get it. Afterall it's important to remember that 80-something percent of the population doesn't give a shit about any given issue.

Legislation passes because it makes good sound bites for politicians, opposing it would make politicians look bad, or it fits in with politicians' world views which tend to be over-simplified and elitist.

This is one of the faults of democracies. You could eliminate it, but that would have its own problems.

Well Friday night my roomate heard someone climbing around on our roof near my bedroom window which I keep open at night. On Sunday there was a gunshow at the Orange County Fair Grounds. Purchased the XD45, saved $100, and they threw in an extra mag! Can't pick it up for another 8 days tho.

I can't wait! :)

How then does a reasonless or unreasonable piece of legislation get that majority of votes then?

Throw in vote trading (illegal, but common) and threat of sanctions from the party whips. Committee membership and chairs are a big element of campaigning and financing.

I left out my favorite: omnibus bills that get enough added until a majority of legislators have something in it to vote for. The 1994 ugly gun ban took 26,000 lines of text (470 pages single spaced with standard top and bottom margins) to pass.

Pork.

Just look at the current vote on war funding, to include a mandatory withdrawal date. The only way the democrats could get enough people to vote for that strategy for defeat, was to offer them loads of pork for their home districts. Millions for spinach farmers, millions for peanut farmers, a half-million for a teapot museum. Yeah, that's right, spinach, peanuts and teapots, in a war-funding bill. But that spinach, peanuts, and teapot funding each got one Representative to vote for the bill, which their leader Nancy Pelosi wants. And the combined total of all the pork-bribed votes comes to 25 billion dollars.

And what lesson do the legislators get from all this? Don't vote based upon principle and what's right. Hold out and see who can offer you the most pork. Then vote for the pork, not for the principle. And who pays for all the pork-bribe vote funding? The taxpayers. You and me.

Furthermore, it means that some Representatives consider things like spinach, peanuts and teapots to be more important than our American fighting men in harm's way.

Pardon me while I go away and puke now.

"And no, the USA is not a democracy, it is a representative democracy."

Actually:
"There is no necessity that individual liberties are respected in a representative democracy. For example, 'the United States relies on representative democracy, but [its] system of government is much more complex than that. [It is] not a simple representative democracy, but a constitutional republic in which majority rule is tempered by minority rights protected by law.' "

It's only a constitutional republic if the constitution is still respected. As things are, this country strikes me more and more as a representative democracy. The statement was intentional.
