Observations on Immigration

Recommended Posts

Today I went to watch about 50 people take the Oath of Citizenship in the Law School Auditorium. The thing that struck me most was that most of them had at least a masters' degree, and most were MDs, PHDs, or another type of highly educated professional...then I think of rural America, and all the useless uneducated redneck fuckwits, and how Xenophobic they are... The US would be fucked without educated immigrants.

Kudos to the American system for placing a premium on educated immigrants (and hopefully on employing them in thier feild). Canada's overly lax family reunification plan has resulted in an intake where only 23% of immigrants meet our criteria for immigration, and the ones with skills are denied the opportunity to work in their feild so engineers end up driving cabs thus denying us any gains on immigration.

In fairness, those with low education are not interacting with the immigrants you describe. They are labourers who are challenged by illegal immigrants who are driving them out of employment and driving salaries (and thus standard of living) down for the lower soci-economic class. Resenting that does not imply xenophobia neccessarily, these guys are treating (illegal) immigrants the way union members treat scabs. Mexican workers in the southern part of Mexico are equally hostile to illegal Guatemalan labour who come even cheaper than Mexicans and thus further diminish the standard of living for Mexicans.

I cannot address this directly as I can only refer to the Canadian experience, but the "we desperately need immigrants" argument is used here in Canada to justify an excessive immigration intake, despite the fact that many leading economists at various institutions have argued that in fact we do not need immigration for our economy neccessarily. Like most government policies (tax, government spending etc) it can have a stabilizing effect at times but also like those policies it can do harm if mismanaged, or utilized for political reasons rather than sound economic arguments.
My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

I used to work for a Brit that had been in the states for 15 years at the time. I asked him if he was a citizen yet. He replied, "no, I should probably do that huh?" Hell yeah....why not? Years later after I left his company he calls me out of the blue to tell me he was going to become a citizen the next week and that I was invited to witness the ceremony since I was the only one to encourage him to become a citizen. He sounded so proud. I wish I could have gone.

Bloody Eyeballs On The Rocks

12 Radishes
7 oz Olives -- pimiento-stuffed
46 oz Tomato juice

Recipe by: Creepy Cuisine, Lucy Munroe

Prepare these bloody eyeballs the day before your plan to serve them. Peel radishes, leaving thin streaks of red skin on them for blood vessels. Using the tip of the vegetable peeler or a small, knife, carefully scoop out a small hole in each radish. Stuff a green olive, pimiento side out, in each hole. Place 1 radish eyeball in each section of an empty ice cube tray. You may need to pare your eyeballs down a bit to fit. Fill the tray with water and freeze overnight. Pour tall glasses 3/4 full of tomato juice and add a pair of eyeballs to each glass.

Than never to have loved at all.

Thank you. A PhD (chemistry)/MBA.

While I am eligible for US Citizenship, haven't had time to pursue it yet. I need to file some paperwork prior to make sure that I keep my EU citizenship, the later being far more important to me.

Nevertheless, thanks for a refreshing view.

How did you find out the educational background of all of the people there?

I'm not so worried that the US has a lack of doctorates. In too many fields they sit in a lousy post doc purgatory until they can find a job.

The educational problem is really at the HS Grad and college BA level, where the skills acquired can vary vastly and sometimes in the wrong direction.

The Circuit Court Judge who gave the oath had each individual state their name, country of origin, and what they did. I heard multiple University professors, Medical Doctors, Pharmacists, chemists, reseachers, etc.--Degree requiring fields.

Eh, they were probably fibbing. Do you really expect them to say, "Hola, I'm Gomez, and I pick tomatos"?

I don't think so. Being Gomez and picking tomatos does not make you ineligible for citizenship, but telling lies to a Judge definitely does.

Once again, George, you've fallen victim to your tendency to take English literally.

Well, that's how I supposed to take it, right?
Just wanted to say that most likely they were not fibbing at all. There are no degree requirements for U.S. citizenship, so lying to have one is useless and definitely dangerous.

Yes, there are plenty of those, and as a country we'd have a pretty rough time without them. You are correct.

Well, it does not appear that you have spent much time in "rural" America. Sure, there are plenty of useless uneducated redneck fuckwits. But there are also a whole lotta useless, uneducated immigrant fuckwits, as well. (From my experience, it's the Americanized children of the immigrants that are the most useless fuckwits out there )

See, the rural useless uneducated redneck fuckwit doesn't see the PhD's, etc, at all regardless of the status of immigrant vs. "born & bred." The term "brain drain" is pretty applicable in a number of places, and rural America is part of it.

I'll put it this way - many of America's so-called "best and brightest" come from rural America - just like from foreign countries.

and how Xenophobic they are

It's surprising to me that you would mention how xenophobic "all the useless uneducated redneck fuckwits" are. I mean, you probably think they are xenophobic because they regard immigrants as "useless uneducated spic fuckwits" right?[:/]
