ACMESkydiver 0 #1 March 22, 2007 Republicans and Democrats working together again... Ahh...isn't it cute? Hilary and Wayne work together to bring forth the Expanding Promise for Individuals with Autism Act of 2007. Hey this is good stuff. I just wanted to bring some good news into Speaker's Corner. -for those that are wanting to bash it for the 'expense it will cost you in taxes' for this dealio, consider this; an Autistic person costs approximately $3.2 million dollars over their lifetime LINK TO HARVARD ARTICLE QuoteAutism Has High Costs to U.S. Society $35 Billion Per Year to Care for Those Affected For immediate release: Tuesday, April 25, 2006 Boston, MA – It can cost about $3.2 million to take care of an autistic person over his or her lifetime. Caring for all people with autism over their lifetimes costs an estimated $35 billion per year. If we can get more Autistics into BETTER therapy and treatment programs earlier, we would look at a decrease in tax money in the long run to support these people as they mature, by giving them needed life skills. I sent a message to my family the other day asking to send their support to their state reps regarding this act. At today's incidence rate, and today's population of the US, that would mean that just about 2 million people would be Dx'd Autistic. That's about the population of Houston. 2 million people...times $3.2 million...is $6,400,000,000,000.00 spent over those peoples' lifetimes. Wow. Good news that this growing epedemic is being addressed. 1 in 150 kids born now will be diagnosed with Autism. Man. It's 1 in 94 boys... Of course I am biased to this legislation, but it is positive. I could care less about what political party anyone is on if they work together to bring about good things. Why can't all those Autistics go back to Autistic-Land where they came from?! AUTISTIC LAND WOULD ROCK!!! ...for a few hours. Autistics see the world similar too, excuse the analogy, one would see the world whilest high on acid and drunk at the same time. No inhibitions, no worry about social stigmas, and everything REALLY[/RED] [ORANGE]BRIGHT[/ORANGE] [YELLOW]AND[/YELLOW] [PURPLE]CRAZY[/PURPLE] AND WAY, WAYYYY TOOOOO LOOOOOUD!!!!!!!!!!! Nice place to visit, but a lighter shade of hell to live in...if someone were suddenly plunged into Autism that has been living a 'normal' life, they would likely go insane. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. It's a book written by an autistic woman about how she sees the world, and it's a really fascinating description of what it's like to live with different neural wiring than the rest of us have. No billvon, actually it WASN'T a joke...it really was a description of how my boys see and hear the world. -Autistics are not all the same, of course...it is a spectrum disorder. I was attempting to liken sensory overload conditions to something that 'typical' people might comprehend -but I know I didn't do a very good job of it. And I know Temple (never met, but I have been following her work for years. She is a celebrity in the Autism community). She is a magnificent person. Very cool that you know of her, too.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
