kkeenan 14 #1 March 13, 2007 I suggest not watching the video and just signing the petition if you are against inhumane, unnecessary slaughter and the elimination of dwindling species. The quote below has special meaning if you watch the video. The video - http://www.glumbert.com/media/dolphin The petition - http://www.petitiononline.com/golfinho/ ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º¤º°`°º¤ Life is pleasant. lawrocket 3 #3 March 14, 2007 A couple of days ago, a Japanese fisherman who was trying to rescue a whale gave his life in the effort when the whale capsized his vessel. story with link to video on left - http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070313/od_nm/japan_whale_dc_1 But, as far as the original petition goes, the guy who originated it posted about it here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2607863#2607863 I will reiterate my points with regard to the petition: 1) I am not comfortable signing it because I believe it is more of a "vent" than it is a call to action - in fact, I drafted one in the thread that I would feel comfortable signing; 2) The petition is useless considering that the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, created in 1946, is the sole governing body for whaling. Japan is a member state. The IWC has since its inception regulated the catches of the large whale species, but member governments hold different views over the legal competence of the IWC to regulate direct and incidental catches of small cetaceans like dolphins and porpoises. This is therefore an international diplomatic issue. 3) I believe that the slaughter of the whales and dolphins is abhorrent, but I also believe that venting about it with an online petition is the equivalent of drinking my problems away - it may make me feel better but once the buzz wears off, the problem is still there... lawrocket 3 #4 March 14, 2007 One more thing - for those interested in the history of the regulation, please visit the IWC web page at http://www.iwcoffice.org/index.htm. In particular, you can learn a lot more about the efforts. Here is an explanation of the issues surrounding dolphins. http://www.iwcoffice.org/conservation/smallcetacean.htm In particular, check out the issues related to "special permit whaling" with Japan, and review the reports and minutes so that anyone can see the international pressure being put on Japan that is far stronger than an online petition. I'd recommend that people contact their country's officials to see what can be done within the system to help.
