I thought that popular view here in SC was that zero-tolerance = zero-intelligence?

it's a general truth, yes.

Pretty poor justification for capital punishment then.

I support the death penalty. I think that we need to send a strong message that there are crimes which are beyond unacceptable. We have a decent system of appeals set up to hopefully protect the innocent - but IMHO, once sentenced and the last appeal is gone, just drag em out and shoot them. Simple.

Is there any evidence that CP is a more effective deterrant than life without parole? I asked this on the first page of the thread and did not get so much as an acknowledgement of the question.

Is there any other benefit of CP over life w/o that would be worth the risk of killing innocents?

I very much agree with Nightingale. The fact that we have uncertainty means killing innocents is inevitable. In the Uk we have had many cases of serious miscarriages of justice particulary with regard to anti terror operations. Whilst I agree some people may deserve death and possibly worse, the fact that we might get the decision wrong means we should not enter into punishments that are so irreversible. If we lock someone up we can release them and compensate them in the event of miscarriage of justice, since we cant revive the dead we should not enter into such a punishment.

This makes me just sick to my stomach. This is why I think we should have an eye for an eye punishment. Death penalty all day long!!!!

Eye for an eye punishment is very misunderstood as a concept. It is actually a limiting punishment not one seaking vengence. It used to be that if somone killed someone else then the dead mans relatives and friends would kill not only the killer but his entire family and friends in some cases. The Judaic law of an eye for an eye was there to limit the punishment to just the perpetrator. Personally I am for the DP in certain situatins but not as a mandtory sentence for murder. I think in the case of child killers and paedophiles (regardless of if they killed or not) then the DP is appropriate on a case by case basis. (Caveat to provide exception in cases of mercy killing where a lesser sentance maybe more appropriate)

Good point, but it was still about vengeance though. It was about restricting vengeance such that vengeful acts do not escalate - it was an attempt at balance. First step towards justice, though a LONG way away from justice.

People today advocate eye for an eye, are really advocating revenge as an emotional release and want to disregard justice. That's why we 'try' to have a dispassionate justice system to protect all of us. One where individuals don't take the law into their own hands.
