Jim Zumbo: NRA, Second Ammendment Opponent

Recommended Posts

just as I said: its in the middle. Moderation. The NRA are gun fanatics to the point that they think they need 50 cal weapons and fully automatic weapons for sport, (well some of them, anyway) Why?. On the otherside, you have the Brady lobyists who think that guns, which are inadimate (sp) objects, can kill. People, not guns, kill. Guns are merely a tool. Without guns there would still be killing.
No one in a particular group will march "lock in step", in this case the guy in the nra, with everyone else all the time. I have no problem w/ guns or the right to not own them.

Moderation.......... a scary word when there is a right or wrong (which is constantly clouded to reduce or eliminate responsibility)

You (in a indirect way) prove the point when you use the term "gun fanatic". A loosly used term when talking about many who like to shoot as much as many (on this site) like to skydive.

Next, I would love to own a 50 cal!! Am I a fanatic? The challange of making a 1500 yard shot is exciting. But I can't ever see me chucking out the serious cash it would take to own one.

Point? who decides? The very debate in this thread calling the AR weapons "terrorists" weapons and saying they have no place in the field, while saying a Browning BAR in a 7mm Mag is ok??

This topic in general is not debated by people (the anti gun side) who have educated themselves. (and don't flame me because I do know there are many exceptions) So, it is debated from a point of emotion and fear.

As you posted, guns don't kill people. If we ban everything that can be used to kill people then we will all be walking everywhere and only have rubber spoons for tools.[:/]

A 9mm is a perfectly legal cartrage to use for deer hunting in Ohio. Any handgun with a camber of .357 or larger and a barrel length of 5 inches or longer. No limits on the number of rounds you can have loaded for handguns, there are for shotguns though. There is the whole no rifle law for deer season in Ohio though.

I would also be willing to take an MP5 off anyones hands that they do not want anymore. :)

His blog got temporarily yanked:

Statement from Outdoor Life

Due to the controversy surrounding Jim Zumbo's recent postings, Outdoor Life has decided to discontinue the "Hunting With Zumbo" blog for the time being. Outdoor Life has always been, and will always be, a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights, which do not make distinctions based on the looks of the firearms we choose to own, shoot and take hunting. Please direct any comments you have to OLletters@time4.com.

Isn't it 357 Magnum or larger? It's been a couple years since I've hunted deer here in Ohio, so the laws may have changed. Oh hell, we BOTH know they change them every year. I don't have a copy of the game laws here so I'll take your word on it.

I agree with people owning guns, law abiding citizens; it's cool; i grew up around them; my dad was a gun guy. But, seriously, guns like the 50 cal are intended for millitary use. As for you desire for a challenge in shooting one, go for it as long as you do it legally. I dont think you could hunt w/ one of those. I believe in hunting w/ single shot weapons; if you miss, you dont get another chance. But i fully agree with a persons right to disagree with me, or anyone else on this issue, even if he works for the nra. Terrorism, National Security, "be a patriot or the terrorists win" have become this nations latest mindless cliques. " Not to suggest that the terrorist who helped perpetuate the events of 9/11 shouldnt be hanged by their balls and beaten to death by an angry mob of man-hating lesbians who are mensturating.
People rarley act based upon facts, and more frequently act based uponn fear and emotion, as you point out. an example is the internment of Japanesse Americans after dec 7 '41 by the same man who said "Those who would give up freedom for safety, deserve neither freedom, nor saftey."
My point: let those who want guns, assuming they're law abiding, have them; however let a man have his own opnnion, regardless of the political backlash it generates from the "guns are evil" left.

No, that was Ben Franklin, 2 centuries ago. FDR said "there is nothing to fear but fear itself."

He is NOT and has never been a "Gun Writer"

You can doubt it all you like, I am willing to demonstrate my abilities if you or anyone has the cash to provide me the opportunity to take the challenge of outhunting and outshooting Mr. Zumbo.

...................................................
If he's not a gun writer then what is he? I've read one article after another, by him, relating to guns, ammo, and hunting. That makes him a gun writer in my book. Frankly I respect his opinion, even though he isn't a young "Pup" and more.

As far as ethics go...as hunters and gun owners we have a lot of freedom here in the U.S. In Montana you can hunt with just about any kind of rifle during rifle season, even a 22 if that's what you want to hunt with. There is little government regulation, and I'd like to keep it that way. If we aren't doing the right thing as hunters, big brother is going to step in and change things with new laws and regulations. We've got enough of that in my opinion.

So, like it or not, hunters and gun owners are under the public's microscope. People are watching what we do every hunting season. Possibly, I need to change some of my ideas on hunting with automatic rifles. But at present I just don't see how hunting with a so called assault rifle or 50 caliber sniper rifle will do anything to improve our image as hunters....Steve1

But for those sort of people watching the microscope, nothing you do will be satisfactory. You're still cold blooded killers who should act like every one else and buy the meat the magically and humanely appears (yeah right) at the supermarket.

So at a certain point, you gotta say, fuck it, and just do what is reasonable. While black powder is kind of fun, it's definitely a different sort of hunting.

Does anyone hunt with a 50? Aren't those things heavy as hell? And too expensive to leave out in the elements for a long trip?

Not everyone watching is an anti-hunter. Some are undecided, others may even be former hunters themselves. The bottom line is that most all of them can vote. Show them enough unethical crap, during hunting season, and you could very well lose your right to hunt.

We lost the Buffalo hunt for many years, here in Montana, because the antis made a field day, over what a few slob hunters may have been doing. We're slowly getting that back. Showing the right kind of image when afield is vital if our sport is going to survive....Steve1

There are many who hunt with .50 BMG rifles, including Eskimos and Native Americans, as well as other more "familiar" hunters.

There is a husband and wife team in PA that hunts white tail deer and elk with them.

They usually shoot at over 1200 meters and have never had an animal not drop dead in its tracks.

Jim Zumbo apologizes:
"They say that hindsight is always 20-20. In my case, hindsight has been a hard teacher, like the father teaching the son a lesson about life in the wood shed.

I was wrong when I recently suggested that wildlife agencies should ban semiautomatic firearms I erroneously called “assault rifles” for hunting. I insulted legions of my fellow gun owners in the process by calling them “terrorist rifles.” I can never apologize enough for having worn blinders when I should have been wearing bifocals..."

It's good that he has seen the error of his ways. Thanks to Ted Nugent for setting him straight.

Jim Zumbo:
"I’m going to devote every ounce of my energy to this battle. I will remind my fellow hunters that we are first, gun owners. Whether we like it or not, our former apathy and prejudices may place that which we love, hunting, in jeopardy. I will educate fellow outdoorsmen who mistakenly think like I talked, even if I have to visit every hunting camp and climb into every duck blind and deer stand in this country to get it done. I was wrong, and I’m going to make it right."

I think he is learning at that his mistake was not putting his foot in his mouth, but speaking what was in his heart, and that was not the preservation of the second amendment.
