Carolyn McCarthy on the Shootings in PA and UT Tuesday February 13, 2007 Yesterday we learned of more unnecessary deaths from gun violence in Philadelphia, PA and Salt Lake City, UT. I am saddened to hear of these events and have introduced legislation that if enacted will prevent further violence. In Philadelphia, a gunman opened fire on his colleagues using an AK-47 assault rifle he legally purchased. These dangerous weapons, which are intended to hit multiple targets in a short period of time, were allowed back on our streets when the federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004. The deaths in Philadelphia could have been prevented if Congress had done its job of protecting the homeland and renewed the assault weapons ban. I have again introduced legislation to permanently ban assault weapons. These weapons have no practical use. They are not used by hunters for sport or by individuals for self-defense. They are intended to kill as many individuals as possible in a short amount of time and have no place on our streets. The unfortunate situation in Philadelphia could have been avoided if Congress stood up to the gun lobby in 2004. In Salt Lake City, a young man opened fire in a crowded mall, killing more than 10 individuals. It appears the shooter was not mentally stable and police are still investigating how he obtained the weapons. It is vital that the background check records are current and comprehensive. I have introduced HR 297, the NICS Improvement Act that would strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. These records let gun dealers know when an individual should not be allowed to purchase a firearm. Improving the quality of these records will keep guns out of the wrong hands and make our country safer. I am deeply saddened by yesterday’s events. I remain committed to passing common sense legislation to prevent further acts of gun violence.

warpedskydiver 0 #4 February 15, 2007 Assault Weapons were banned in 1934 they are regulated by a tax stamp and require a federal license for $200 and includes fingerprinting and a picture of the applicant. (Form 4) A form needs to be filled out and paid for and approved by the BATFE in order to move one of these merely accross a state line. Since 1986 there has been no new FA weapons produced for the general public. The result of this is if it is a Registered Receiver (RR) or a Registered Drop In Auto Sear (RDIAS) it will eventually wear out and cannot be replaced if unable to repair. The price of a full auto these days hovers around 20k dollars and are scarce to say the least.
warpedskydiver 0 #5 February 15, 2007 Actually I own NO ASSAULT WEAPONS. I have a very small collection or semi auto and pump action rifles and or shotguns. Does this make me a murderer or a criminal in any way? NO Will these insane laws, derived upon lies, make me a criminal if passed? YES
warpedskydiver 0 #6 February 15, 2007 Another fact this shit for brain politician fails to mention is that the killer in this latest case used a pump action shotgun.
Andy9o8 2 #7 February 15, 2007 Randall - As a professional advocate, let me give you a piece of advice. If you're trying to persuade people who already agree with you...they already agree with you. If you're trying to persuade people who might be on the fence about the issue, your angry demeanor probably won't persuade them to your side, and may even tilt them over to the other side. Like it or not, people who misunderstand guns because they've had very little cultural exposure to them tend to presume that anger and firearms do not mix well. If the issue is that important to you – and obviously it is – you'd probably be better served being a spokesman for what's right about your side in the debate than a poster child for what's wrong about it. Nick 0 #10 February 15, 2007 QuoteI just hate it when our elected officials WANT to make ordinary law abiding citizens into criminals with a stroke of a pen. That smacks of TYRANNY. Surely that depends on the law that's being implemented, how about the DUI laws or drug use laws for examples. I'm sure that as a democracy your elected representatives will consider whether this law is appropriate for your society. Nick Gravity- It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW! My one question for this politician: How will it help prevent further violence? I've yet to hear anyone in favor of the AWB explain this concept. JohnRich 4 #12 February 15, 2007 QuoteIn Philadelphia, a gunman opened fire on his colleagues using an AK-47 assault rifle... In Salt Lake City, a young man opened fire in a crowded mall... Notice how quick she is to point out the AK-47 rifle. And then notice how she doesn't even bother to mention what type of firearm was used in Utah. Well, that happened to be a shotgun. And then she goes on to call for a ban on so-called assault weapons. So, I guess she either: 1) isn't interested in stopping mass murders committed with shotguns, or; 2) she considers shotguns to be "assault weapons" too and also wants to ban those, or; 3) she's a hypocrite and only wants to ban one of the two types of firearms in the mass murders she highlights. I wonder which it is? I wouldn't fret much about her. She introduces crap like this all the time, and it doesn't go anywhere. It's her only claim to fame, and she keeps dancing in the blood of the dead to further her agenda.

She should introduce a law to allow concealed weapons there. but then that would INCREASE the number of guns, therefore it doesn't fill her need to remove guns from citizens. so we won't see her doing that.
