Terrorists have won.

We did it all the time. We used to drop a little sodium/magnesium package into the Charles just under the Harvard Bridge. It would burn amazingly brightly for a few minutes. We also used to hang out under the bridge in the middle of town in Worcester; we would often even bring (gulp!) a RADIO! Horrors.

Around here I'll occasionally rappel off a bridge over Penasquitos Canyon. It's a nice little 150's rappel.

>You don't fuck about like this and then whine like a little girl when consequences hit...

There are an awful lot of cops whining like little girls right now. "Someone save us from the scary Lite-Brite!" I remember when we, as a nation, had a lot more guts than that.

>It's a different world

Everybody thinks that. The country will never, ever be the same since:

brother fought brother in the Civil War
we lost tens of thousands in Vietnam
we realized the USSR could destroy us in moments
those nurses were raped and murdered
JFK was assassinated
MLK was assassinated
those terrorists tried to blow up the WTC
those terrorists blew up the WTC

Take a look around. Nothing's different. We have a new agency (the TSA) which has managed to become as ineffective as the earlier private security firms were at screening passengers. But at least they have better uniforms.

True, there are some people living in fear nowadays. That hasn't changed, but what they are afraid of has. Used to be the USSR, or the North Koreans, or the Germans, or the pedophiles, or the serial killers - now it's the terrorists. That's fine. Let them live in fear if they choose. I choose not to, and fortunately most people make the same decision nowadays.

The change in circumstances does not meen it's OK to randomly criminalize legal activities and abuse due process by trumping up charges.

Play the 9-11 card all you like, it doesn't give jack booted peckerheads carte blance to do what the heck thek like no matter how irrational or assinine.

People in public office have many responsibilities they need to ballance, if they can't they should quit or be booted out. The bozos running Boston have demonstrated that they lack the required sense of proportion and ballance.

Easy to say since this has proven to be a hoax. If this were the real deal, you'd praise the authorities' response.

By "fuck around" you're referring to doing something perfectly legal that some politician makes a fuss about later, and by consequences you mean get arrested on trumped up charges that are clearly not applicable to anyone with a sense of integrity, and by whine like a little girl you mean defend yourself against aforementioned trumped up charges.

Yes, yes I see it now, "You don't do something legal like this then get to defend yourself when the trumped up charges hit". I don't like your America very much can we have the original one back please?

I can't believe some retarded jackass thought that was something to get a whole city scared over (attached to a bridge or not). :S

Whoever that asshole was should be the one to foot the million dollar bill.

Out of curiosity, how do they arrive at a million dollar bill for this? In a country where LE officers scream they are woefully underpaid, just how many of these guys did they send out? Were any of these guys working when the alarm was sent out, or did they all just jump out of bed into automatic overtime? Was there a toxic spill/nuclear waste cleanup? Perhaps it was R&D costs to develop a lite-brite dearmer on the spur of the moment.

I don't know all of the details of the case, but I've seen pictures where state police, firemen, and bomb squad people were involved. Saw some video where they were putting the "device" in one of those tubes to blow it up. Not sure if they actually blew it up though.

I'm sure getting all those kinds people involved in a city-wide effort was expensive.

BTW, among the others posted, here's a pretty good picture of the "device":

All the brave are in Iraq and Afghanistan, everybody that wants to stay here are the ones who talk big but would sell their first born child to avoid serving in combat.

And this would include your brainless leader George W. Bush and his band of chicken hawks who were able to avoid duty in Vietnam but, have no problem sending people to war as long as their own don't have to serve?

If your post was a bomb, it could explode and destroy your house!
My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

>Per Fox News, Turner has promised to pay, and there are criminal charges for the moron perps.

And thank god our police, criminal justice system and prisons are being used to deal with this serious threat to our children's lives, rather than wasted arresting and prosecuting people like rapists, who are really just victims of poor upbringing themselves. We can all rest easy tonight knowing that we are concentrating on the real threats to our safety.

Okay, you are scared, that is fine. You can crawl under the bed so the evil terrorist will not get you.
If you justify the police overreaction, i think you would not be brave enough to live in the U.K or Spain where REAL terrorist attacks happens (or used to happen) every other month. Leaving aside Palestine and other 3 world countries.
Nah, you wouldn´t make it in England, after all it is not the home of the brave or the land of the free. :P

Why do you call this a hoax? A hoax would be planting an inert object intentionally made to look like a bomb or whatever.

Yup. law enforcement at its best:S.
Moron prosecutor patting herself on the back and praising the outstanding police work as if they just uncovered a plot to blow up Fenway Stadium during opening season. Face it, the authorities are the real morons here.

Public safety officials, as well as a large segment of Boston's older generation, condemned the publicity campaign as unthinkable in today's post-9/11 world.

"Just a little over a mile away from the placement of the first device, a group of terrorists boarded airplanes and launched an attack on New York City," police Commissioner Edward Davis said in an interview with The Associated Press.

In addition to figuring out and executing an exit strategy from Iraq, we need to figure out and execute an exit strategy from this "post 9/11 world" I keep hearing about. It sounds a lot scarier than Iraq.

I'm waiting for a good picture of the electronic components on the board, as well as a description of what the sign board was made of, how thick, etc. My guess is that the circuit was obviously an LED driver circuit. So far, it looks like the largest volume available for explosives would be in the form of fake batteries stuffed with explosives.

Let's say all four batteries were "D" cells filled with a good explosive, AND that the LED's were really disguised solar cells, AND that the sign board was really a big capacitor designed to store enough charge to detonate the (maybe) 1.5 lbs. of explosive. Wouldn't do shit. Shaped charges? Wouldn't do shit.

I spy an LM2585S-12 flyback voltage reg (with accompanying caps, diode, and inductor) a photo diode to shut the thing off during the day, and a simple looping timer to allow it to blink.

...obviously a bomb...

555 timer? I couldn't tell. Looks like the sign board was the PCB for the circuit. Maybe the board was actually C-4 compressed to black-hole density.

I find it deplorable that too many Americans are willing to undermine the war against real terrorists and undermine the support for that war by turning it into a war against their fellow citizens.
