Since when did a funny looking cartoon lit up with diodes become a bomb?

Since when did everyone decide to shut down a city when they see a funny looking piece of plastic lit up with diodes.

I think the Boston "marketing stunt" yesterday was funny and a classic way of creative marketing.

I think the Boston police, who just assumed it had to be a bomb, and shut down the city - are the ones that went over the top. Sure they should investigate, but come on...

Am I crazy??? Do these lit up signs look like bombs to you? (Attached)

Now they are calling it a bomb "hoax". And they arrested the guys who made them. Do you honestly think the guys who made them wanted to be a bomb scare? Perhaps they were stupid, but arrested for placing some lit signs here and there???

Clearly a lit up LED thing, with dancing lights, is not a bomb any more than a kid running a remote control car.

I mean come on. It is a battery, a piece of black plastic drilled with lights in it. No large bomb, no hidden areas to put explosives, no big box... The design was so simple I would have walked up to it, and felt comfortable picking it up. Or maybe if I was a cop, use one of those cool remote control robots to kick it and drop it to prove it was just a kids toy...

I remember seeing this story yesterday on CNN as I was at the gym, and I stopped what I was doing and thought, "oh god, the terrorists have won." I mean, my senior pranks in highschool where more threatening to the lifestyle of Americans then a cartoon figure lit up in lights...

So, I read an article in Popular Mechanics this month... It is about police having military equipment to use against citizens.

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/4203345.html

I think the article is very timely.

Excerpt:

Quote

This approach, though, has led to problems both obvious and subtle. The obvious problem should be especially apparent to readers of this magazine: Once you’ve got a cool tool, you kind of want to use it. That’s true whether it’s a pneumatic drill, a laser level or an armored fighting vehicle. SWAT teams, designed to deal with rare events, wound up doing routine police work, like serving drug warrants.

The subtle effect is also real: Dress like a soldier and you think you’re at war. And, in wartime, civil liberties—or possible innocence—of the people on “the other side” don’t come up much. But the police aren’t at war with the citizens they serve, or at least they’re not supposed to be.

I got a good laugh out of that myself. Next thing will be pet owners being fined because somebody mistakes their dogs electronic training collar for a bomb collar.:P

It probably all started when some jerk saw one of the signs, started yelling "BOMB!", then people started pointing out more of them. Hell, until I read the article I thought it was just a picture of a cartoon character.

I kept watching the news last night trying to figure out how it was a bomb scare/hoax.....I still can't figure that one out. I just was watching MSNBC on the way in to work and the two guys they arrested were grining as they walked by the camera.

In other words, if all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

I read this morning they were planning to go after the "parties responsible" to collect the $500,000 spent on the bomb scare. I would suggest the authorities look in the mirror to find the responsible parties.

Because they know they will be tried by a jury of their peers and they will be found....

No... Wait... They should be :( because the jury is going to be pissed they were late for work and want to get even.

Great, my freedom for the rest of my life is going to be determined by 12 people so stupid they could not get out of jury duty.

Coming from Chicago where the Mayor plows under an airport in a hissy fit because Disney World gets a TFR and we don't.....I tend to believe that this was escalated for a reason, someone has an agenda in Boston.

And for tue jury...what't the worst that can happen. It's not like our legal system would find someone guilty for using someone elses computer that had spyware on it and those adds were seen by children......

The men did not speak or enter their own pleas, but they appeared amused and smiled as the prosecutor talked about the device found at Sullivan Station underneath Interstate 93, looking like it had C-4 explosive.

That statement was taken from a report on a news website. I'm no explosives expert, but since when can you tell just by the appearance of a package that it contains C-4? What are the tell-tale signs? The boxes at the bottom of the signs looked like batteries wrapped in black tape or maybe even, God forbid, a ballast from a flourescent light!

The way I see it, the jackasses running Boston are painting a big target on thei city with this crap. They're announcing to the world:

"Look at how scared shitless we acted over nothing, just imagine what a bunch of jelly spined fucktards we'd become over the real thing?"

Jefferson would have frog-marched the lot of them to the guillotine.

Illegal placement of lit sign? Why should they pay for the stupidity of the cops in Boston?

You miss his point. In the war on terrorism, any injustice is justified, so long as an authority benefits.

All the brave are in Iraq and Afghanistan, everybody that wants to stay here are the ones who talk big but would sell their first born child to avoid serving in combat. The reaction to this incident is just sad, a bunch of flashing lights, whether you know the cartoon or not it doesn't take a genius to know that wasn't a bomb, unless you believe that all bombs look like the ones with computer screens and lasers like in the movies.

History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.

But isn't it typically American to be 'By the book' and have no concept of flexibility in varying situations whatsoever?

An example I'd like to provide:

Myself and some friends are sunbathing by a lake near Fort Bragg, NC. Smith lake I think it's called. Either way, this was years ago. About 15 metres from the little beach there is a line, marking an area where you can't swim beyond or go beyond in the peddle boats. NOT because you'd then interfere with the water skiiers. It's just there.

So off we went past the line in the peddle boat, took of our life preservers ( which were obligatory if you wanted to hire the boat) and went for a swim. Big deal right?

Nah - minutes few later a mentalist appears in a speed boat going mental over the fact that not only have we crossed the line, we've also took off our life preservers. And gone swimming!!! :o

So a bit of an argument ensued, with dickhead threatning to call the MP's, which ended up with the said chap receiving a poke in the eye and going for a swim himself.

MENTAL.

Anyway, that was a long, peacetime example, more than 10years ago.

Would you like to hear some more upto date ones?

:S

So out of 300,000,000 USA population, around 140,000, or 0.05% are brave and the other 99.95% are wimps. Sad.

Agreed abouty the STUPID reaction in Boston. Jeez!

Video of them distributing the signs:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=2a64964ab9

They even let their faces be seen in the video while committing that reprehensible act!

I find it personally appalling that terrorist act didn't even create a stir in the other 9 cities where it was committed!:o I'm moving to Boston where the authorities take my safety seriously.
