Psychics problem/solution

Recommended Posts

In light of the recent Shaun Hornbeck case,

[sic] Back in February, 2003, “psychics” Sylvia Browne and James Van Praagh were consulted by the parents of missing 11-year-old Shawn Hornbeck – Pam and Craig Akers. That young man just recently turned up – very much alive and well, in rather sharp disagreement with the prognostications of the humbug artists. The Hornbecks had talked February 11th with Sylvia Browne on the Montel Williams television show, where she informed them that Shawn was "no longer with us," which means “dead.” She said his body was in a wooded area “about 20 miles southwest of Richwoods, Missouri.” She said it would be near two large, jagged boulders that “seem out of place in that area,” and she added that the bicycle he was riding when he disappeared, is in a dump "in another state." As a result of Browne’s fruitless guess, intensive searches by hundreds of volunteers were conducted in the general area described by her, but naturally, with no success. Not even “jagged boulders” showed up, let alone the kid – until he was found and returned home on Friday, January 12th. He’d been gone for 1,559 days!

But there was more specific drivel from Browne, She said that Shawn had been taken by a "dark-skinned man, he wasn't black – more like Hispanic." She said the kidnaper had long, black hair worn in dreadlocks and was "really tall." He was driving an older model blue sedan, she said, a car with fins like in the late 1950's and early 1960's Chevrolets. All of this drivel was wrong, from the description of the man – he is not Hispanic nor dark-skinned, he’s Caucasian, he’s heavy and not tall – and his car was quite the opposite of Browne’s invented notions: it was a white pickup truck.

The Akers also appeared in television segments on “Beyond” with James Van Praagh, another equally accurate “psychic.” He led the search in an entirely different direction, suggesting that a person who worked in a railroad car plant was involved, and that the body “might” be concealed in a railway car. Again, totally wrong, in all respects. This fatuous guess-fest also led to numerous detailed searches, including a railroad yard – all a waste of time and money, at the expense of the frantic parents.

So are psychics a solution or a Problem???

I've seen shows where the police supposedly consulted psychics on cold cases. I always thought those shows were bullshit on a par with that alien autopsy film a few years back.

Would cops actually seriously consult psychics & launch an expensive search based on what the psychic said??:S

I am not a religous man but I am open to things we do not understand.

Some of the psychic stuff is bullshit(just jumping on a bandwagon) but some has some grounds that prompt a deeper understanding of the subject.

the Human brain is something that is not completely understood and we only use a small portion of it!

other things such a telepathy are also used conciously and subconciously.

Ever been thinking of someone just before they phoned or pulled into the driveway?

aborigionals use telepathy while hunting!

and psychics?

my friend was with his girlfriend when she visited a psychic. Reluctantly he let her look at him!

The psycic described me as a good friend and said we would not be friends much longer and I would find a girlfriend and marry her.

I laughed at the thought at the time(young dumb and full of cum) but only a couple of months later that particular friend (?) decided to dishonour our trust and we no longer talk to each other. I am also engaged to be married to my partner.

So does that mean the you have 'Concluded' that we know all the capabilities of the human brain r should i say the human mind?

and there is no more to learn?

maybe the title of the thread should be called

science problem/solution

:D

that was a pretty narrow minded comment.

Define Magic?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/magic

I like this one

6. any extraordinary or mystical influence, charm, power, etc.: the magic in a great name; the magic of music; the magic of spring.

The Magic that makes everything grow and exist is usually mis represented by various religons.

existance itself is Magic.

Religon (as we know it) is the scam

I suppose if you want to read it that way, then yes, for the most part we do. There is NO "psychic" function in the brain. None.

If you can show me ANY credible evidence to the contrary, actual evidence, capable of being duplicated by experimentation, then I'll retract everything and pay your favorite charity $1000.

BTW, I've made this bet numerous times with a wide variety of people over the years and so far I haven't lost a dime.

I'd say psychics like that are generally completely bogus.. those with such abilities would have no need to brag or publicize them, but i will relate one incident that happened to me personally, as i have a friend who makes her living as a 'psychic adviser' for those who seek her out (she will openly admit that 80% of her job is simply listening well)

while i was in the Army I had a VERY bad week (3 friends had died) and was dangerously close to gross insubordination because of my mental state.. i hadnt talked to ANYONE outside of my immediate military circle, but left immediately after work and drove 'home' (4 hours away) without calling anyone or even changing out uniform.

when i got to their house the door was open, the porch light was on and there was a slightly chilly beer sitting in 'my' chair. She'd bought the six pack of beck's that afternoon (her husband doesnt drink it really) without thinking about it, and set one out when she came back from the kitchen... as i walked up the steps she opened the door, gave me a hug and said "i had a feeling you'd be here tonight"

Probably because all the people you made the bet with thought to themselves:

"what a stiff".

And couldn't be bothered discussing it any further!

:D

Your statement I was commenting on was:

>"Sigh.

Sorry to tell you this, but "magic" doesn't exist in this world. "

You didn't define magic in its complete definition.

Some things we will never be able to 'Conclude' properly with an experiment.

This is where sciences weakness is!

If you dont want Pauls $1000 then how about Mr Randi's $million

Im affraid as to this date there still is not a shred of evidence to support the "paranormal".

That is very interesting.

Like i said earlier. some things cannot be explained properly by experiement.

i didn't vote in the pol because i believe psychics are a problem or solution. they are simply there and you choose wheathr you want to belive or not.

Things that are not understood are often described as magic.

Ther is plenty of Magic in this world!

I think pyschics are a problem, not a big problem like religion is but a problem none the less. the reason for this is that people waste their time and money on them and more importantly people make decisions based on entirley bogus information. Belief in erroneous concepts like pyschics can have even more negative impacts when for example someone with a genuine health complaint goes to a see a pyshcic for advice rather than a doctor.

I do a bit of ameteur magic and one thing I do know is there isnt one pyschic phenemenon that cant be replicated by a skilled magician. I would suggest anyone go on you tube and look up Derren Brown to show you this. No one has ever won James Rxadni's challenge and this is strong evidence that pyshcics dont exist. Of course it isnt proof pyschics dont exist simply because you can't prove that something doesnt exist. You cant prove invisible unicorns dont exist. As long people fail to understand this people will believe in pyschics, I suggest more education in critical thinking may be part of the solution. the idea that we dont know everyhting about the brain and thereofre maybe pyschics are real is false. Sure we don't know evverything about the brain but that doesnt me we are free to suppose any old nonsense. the oyschic phenemenon has no theoreitcal or empirical basis in fact, everything can be replicated by magic tricks and so its pretty safe to assume thats all there is to it.

So in the case of Shaun Hornbeck parents, they consulted probably to 2 best known psychics in the US and were told by both there son was dead.. only to find out years later he wasnt. and you dont have a problem with that.????

Your not bothered by these people, Browne, Van Praagh, Edwards making millions of dollars by explioting people, by preying on there emotions??????

Its interesting that the psychic industry is not regulated, there is nothing to stop you setting up shop tomorrow as a psychic, no tests you have to take, no formal qualifications needed, why is that do you think??

So, I guess all of those vibes, good thoughts, and prayers for someone who breaks themselves on a landing if just a giant waste of energy, and all of those people are full of it?[:/]

>give me an example..

utilising the definition:

6. any extraordinary or mystical influence, charm, power, etc.: the magic in a great name; the magic of music; the magic of spring.

The magic of spring, everything combined utilising the warmth of a new season for growth and reproduction.

That is Magic

Existance in the first place

that is magic

the feeling i get during and immediately after swooping down a hill.... Magic.

I depends how you define magic.

i'm not talking about finding a lost card in a deck or walking through the great wall of china (fuck that was cheesy:D)

Would you consider telepathy to be a part of this?

Haven't police been helped by psychics in some instances?

You might as well ask if they've been helped by the tooth fairy. Geeze people come on!

I have 2 modest proposals:

1) all psychics should be arrested on fraud charges, pleas of insanity will be acceptable, but they shall be incarcerated until cured.

2) all people professing belief in psychics shall be prohibited from using modern technology, including but not limited to, telephones, radio, video and other recording devices, televisions, the internet, computers, internal combustion engines.

That should solve the problem in short order.

Newsflash, belief in Santa Claus and other figments of the imagination does not constitute broad mindedness.

Scientists are the most broadminded people you'll ever meet. They routinely believe stuff that would bend your mind and leave you drooling incoherently in the corner. The difference is they have sound theories and observetions to back up the profoundly wierd nature of the REAL universe, and are driven to accept the models they have as best fits to explain their observations.

This Sylvia Browne and similar con artists remind me of the racetrack scam, where the grifter gives everyone a "hot inside tip" with the promise of a kickback, of course everyone gets a different hot tip, and someone wins, everyone else is SOL, don't return to the bookies or if they do it's just bad luck.

People only hear the story of the winner who got the hot inside tip and won, but for each of these there are many uncounted victims.

rhys come on mate, you know full well the "magic" you feel when swooping has nothing to do withh this debate. we are talking about pyschics, those that claim supernaturla powers. These people are either lying to themsleves or lying to others.

Psst..I don't think psychics use physics....

I don't have an opinion on whether psychics are a problem.

But as a card-carrying Math-o-phobe (License # D-2299; I/E rating), I definitely think that physics IS a problem. Or as Pogo once said, nuclear physics ain't so new, and it ain't so clear.

But I suppose you knew I was going to say that...
